I'm thinking about selling my 280x cards and buy new ones for better power consumption.
Which is better? AMD RX 480 or Nvidia GTX 1070?

I am paying too much for power and mining is just an hobby for me. I'll sell my 4x r9 280x cards and buy two RX480 or GTX 1070 and maybe add more cards later.

I'm running one r9 290x and two Fury's right know (also a hobbyist).  They do use electricity and I am running them with stock bios and settings! What do you calculate your wattage savings to be by changing cards?

I user whattomine.com to calculate cards.

3x r9 280x GPUs making 870 H/s and using 690 Watts.
3x rx480 GPUs making  870 H/s and using 360 Watts.
2x Nvidia GTX 1070 making 840 H/s and using 240 Watts.

GTX 1070 seems more power efficient. But they are two times expensive. I think I'd better buy rx480 GPUs. And I can sell my r9 280x GPUs one by one and buy the rx480 GPUs one by one, so I'll not have to spend from my pocket.

Are the rx480s and r9 280x runs together in a rig?
currently I have one r9 270 and 3 r9 280x running in one rig.

I heard Vega 10 Gpu will be around 600$

Is 600 H/s realistic for Vega 10?...of course after some claymore tuning

Thinking about building 2 vega 10  6 gpu rigs

FYI you can get the Fury at $230 that give you 470 sols @ 250 watts. That's 5650 Sols total on a total investment of $2700. The monthly profit is $825 giving you a 3 month ROI, The Vega at $500 a piece will give you an ROI in 8 month.

Is the Fury better investment than the rx480 then?

About the same although the rx480 is better on power consumption. This is based on advertised sale prices in the US

RX480: 330 sols for $170 = $.51/sol ..... 660 sols @ 250 watts = 2.64 sols/watt
Fury:   470 sols for $230 = $.48/sol ...... 470 sols @ 250 watts = 1.88 sols/watt

I heard you can undervolt the fury by 100 mv and the consumption goes down to 175 watts and the rx480 down to 100 watts, but haven't tried it on either
just picked up rx 470 asus strix 4gb for $120 w rebate...just seemed to cheep to pass up.

+1 for the ASUS RX470. Yea the price and performance for the cost is amazing. I have 4 of these currently and hoping to gradually convert over. What are you getting out of it for hashing? Mine are doing around 270. Can't seem to make much by way of improvement to that.

Had same problem

Started with some random restarts like once every 2 days and at the end every 3 hours

Then I saw a lot dust in my those gpus fans and cooling ribs
I guess the dus caused the gpu to oberheat and restart

Removed dust with vacuum cleaner..Problem fixed

Take 8 - it will be faster and more perspective.

I prefer Sapphire Nitro+
"CRYPTOMINED" had been recommending Sapphire, but found a problem if you mount your cards vertically. He now recommends XFX. You can search his name here on on youtube.

thanks, wasn't sure. I think I should be getting better performance.
currently getting 260 sols. intensity 7  undervolted pulling 310 watts.

Sorry to ask maybe on the wrong topic.  I just wanted any opinions of the forthcoming AMD hardware and its possibility to bring forward mining speeds.
580 will come soon but maybe a much bigger move will be Vega in May onwards.

Is Deep Learning relevant to crypto mining or not likely to bring mining gains for the various blockchains?

http://instinct.radeon.com/en-us/the-potential-disruptiveness-of-amds-open-source-deep-learning-strategy/
not sure 580 will change things significantly in performance per watt. More likely next generation Vega will though.

580 cards are the same polaris chip so until Vega we won't see anyting spectacular.

580 is NOT the same chip - they are making the 5xx series on an updated process that is a little more efficient than the process the 4xx series were made on.
Looks like about a 5% clock speedup on the GPU as well, no hard numbers on the efficiency but I'd guess 5-10% more efficient

Small actual upgrade, not to be confused with VEGA (which appears to be aimed at being the next-generation of the Fury line anyway).

I'm no longer legendary just in my own mind!

That could be the similar improvement between 390 and 290.

You are right. My electricity price is $0.2. It is still very profitable.
