I sell PCIe risers so let me pitch in. I've sold thousands of risers and tested several different versions, vendors, and types.

It is possible for you to have a bad riser but usually it doesn't burn up GPUs.  Usually, if someone has burned up GPUs there are other issues with the power supply. For example, they are connected improperly, run too many risers on one power cable, or insert the connector boards/cables improperly.  I had a customer complain that my risers caused two of his GPUs to burn up. I asked him to take photos and look at the 1x card that plugs into the motherboard. After taking the photos he admitted that he realized he installed the 1x card improperly.

It is possible if you get old risers that they could burn out with high power usage. The narrow risers (or older version 1, 2, 3) typically don't have enough capacitors on them.  They can't handle high power.

Version 6 risers pretty much all have 3 capacitors on them. MOST people selling risers now days should be selling at least version 6. There is a version 6 with a voltage regulator but you'll have to pay extra for that.

Green version 6 are what we sell the most of. I am using them in my own rigs. They work very well. I try not to connect more than one riser per SATA connection. 2 at most.

There is also a blue version 6 and 7 that has a 6 pin PCIE power connector. These have an extra capacitor (4th capacitor).  That means they handle high power usage better.  There are also a few other minor improvements to the blue version 6/7 riser. I call them "server quality" risers.

Red version 7 and Green version 7 also appear stable. I'm running both to test on one of my rigs.

You can also test your risers by simply using touch. Feel the power cables and make sure they aren't getting too hot to the touch.  There are also infrared thermometers you can get for $25-$40.  You can find them at home improvement stores, cooking stores, and online at Amazon.

HEAT is a bad sign. If the power cable is getting too hot you have problems.

I am assuming you are in Windows 10 so yes the windows need to "see" your new GPU's bios mod
They will start going black screen and appearing in a loop trying to cope with the change.
Do a reboot after that and if the cards are not recognized as they should you have to do a DDU and reinstall the drivers

I give it a 70% chance that you will need to reinstall drivers

But The miner see the 2 cards. Drivers tested 16.6.2 -16.9.1 -16.11.2.

GPU #0: Ellesmere
14cc   GPU #1: Fiji
14cc   ZEC - Total Speed: 282.283 H/s, Total Shares: 0, Rejected: 0, Time: 00:00
14cc   ZEC: GPU0 282.283 H/s, GPU1 0.000 H/s
14cc   Pool switches: ZEC - 0
14cc   Current ZEC pool share target: 0x00083126 (diff: 8000H)

Since you are using a custom BIOS the driver you use will either have to be older than 16.12.1 (AMD started BIOS signature checks in this version and newer). If you are windows 10 there is a workaround to doing this using the newer drivers. I use 16.12.1 for my ETH rig since my R9 380 runs better on that driver than older ones. You can find the guide here: https://www.techpowerup.com/228536/amd-bios-signature-check-re-enabled-with-relive-locks-out-polaris-bios-modders.

You will need to have physical access to your rig to do this it requires you to boot into "Safe Mode"

Also I would like to know the results of your BIOS mod since I have 2 of those cards running ZEC currently unmodified.

I have a friend running a fury and its picky about drivers. He is currently using 16.3.2 doing about 450H/s unmodified. Issue is you can't use 16.3.2 with the 480 so you will need to separate them in order to use both of them for ZEC.

You could try newer drivers but the Fury's are quite picky with drivers. At that point would be trial and error or if anyone else has successfully ran a newer driver with the Fury. I would just use 2 different machines for them. Better in the long run and if you plan to expand it gives you options of creating 2 different rigs for more diversity as well. Good advice for anyone mining is keep like cards of similar generation on the same machine to avoid driver issues and not mix and match.

Use -wd 0 to avoid freezing of miner. And decrease the clock on GPU1.

It depends on the mem type the card has. I had a XFX R9 28X Black Edition with Elpida memory and could barely hit 296H/s out of it. Where as the same card but with Hynix memory was capable of 320H/s so more than likely your has Elpida memory or just not OC'd at all. And I ran mine on -i 5 as well because -i 6 didn't work either.

Is intensity really an issue? I get same speed from my Cards regardless if I use I 6, 5, 4 or even 3. The only thing affecting my hash is voltage and core clocks
