No idea why you hating Bitmain and their product S9. I have received my first S9 and it is more silent, cooler and hashing slightly over nominal hashrate opposite 741 which hashing below nominal hashrate. And also if I consider price and power efficency it beats Avalon.
So far the only advantage of Avalon seems to be resistance to dusty environment.

Benefits of Avalon are:

  • Distributors
  • Reliability
  • Seriously... working through Distributors

The S9 is superior to the 741 in terms of hash rate per watt. But they're known to burn out or arrive with dead boards.

There's no way the S9 is quieter than the 741. And both my 741s hashed above 7.8TH/s when set to normal voltage and mining in a garage with no mechanical ventilation (just open windows).

The 821 is coming out and is far closer to competing with the S9.

OK trying to set up my first set of 741s (have experience with s9 and e9 miners) and I'm having issues having the controller recognize any modules. I am down to troubleshooting one module with the controller to see what I can do.

Using a 2A usb plug for the controller.
Firmware 20170603
1200W HP server PSU @ 240V

AUC3 converter is blue with green light....
I've tried a couple different converters, cables and usb cables to no avail.... any help would be appreciated.

Problem solved. I had changed the pool info and it was not happy with my settings. A password for whatever pool you are using is necessary or it will not connect. Disregard my issue.

anyone know where the 4-pin cable connecting miner to auc converter can be found. I'm sure if I had the right name for it I can find it at a cable store?
Looks like a 4pin audio cable to a 5-1/2 cdrom.

It's a five pin cable between the AUC (AvalonMiner USB Converter) and the miner..

Here is a good advice from Phil for a replacement cable.
Does anyone know where you can find replacement  AUC3 I2C 5PIN Cable for the 741. Or even an option that would be a little longer?

I have the top two they work.

use the colored ones

make sure the same  color is on the left  on both units

Just received a shipment from avalon, it was supposed to contain a new fan.

Instead the package has a fan shroud!

2.5 weeks down on a brand new miner.

Just buy a replacement with fast delivery from Amazon, Newegg, etc. whatever shop that is able to ship in your country fast.

It is way more cheaper solution than losing hashing time.

Hey by the way, this is the first time I notice that Canaan now has a two-year warranty for the mining hardware.

https://canaan.io/warranty/

Nice.

Not true, 90 days is all they give you on the miners.

90 days  free of charge.  After that you'll get spare parts for a charge

Personally, I am not a fan of the integrated PSU.  PSUs go bad- that is the nature of the beast.  Now when one craps out- the whole unit is dead vs being able to swap it out in 30 seconds.

The front of the unit comes off and there are two terminals  to wire a PSU  into the device  in case the  internal PSU  craps
    out.

This was my biggest concern. PSUs  tend to be less reliable than the miners, so it was imperative that if the Integrated PSU craps out that we be able to quickly supply power from an external one.  Basically 2 screws and your there.

After a few months in the field  I'll have revised in field failure rates of the integrated PSU.

For now I'm restricting sales of the 761 ( it sold out ) so I can monitor closely..  Later in 2018  there will be an 861

Agreed.

Integrating the PS should reduce the cost, but not sure they'll be passing that onto us.

Cost was a wash... added more chips, added more components for PSU, meh

The biggest driver of Price is the Restricted supply and I model the break even time so that it stays in a range
BTC goes up, price goes up  but I try to keep the break even time  within a reasonable zone
Assuming a constant BTC price and 3-5%  compounding difficulty increase every two weeks

I guess after testing A8 they will be splitted in slow 761 for China and fast A8 for rest of the world.

No, if you look at the specs for both machines the A8 is using different chips.

Correct.  Steve has said that they have sold different models to Asia in the past.  I believe the 761 falls into that category.

ya,  inside china there was a 720, 740...
761 was suppose to be all my baby,  but... I only got a small portion to sell.
Since its a new design ( integrated PSU)  and I'm super conservative I didnt want it shipping to 15 different countries
   in small quantities..

   861 will go world wide

I'm guessing the 761 is just for them to use up their inventory of the old chips.

nope.  761 has been on the roadmap  through all of 2017.

Not sure how I feel about the integrated PSU feature...I share the same concerns of other posters here. While the performance increase could be more than worth it, what exactly happens when it breaks? I would assume we continue to enjoy the same warranty plan, but do you need to ship the entire unit back?

When I bought my 741 I purposely did not get it with the factory sorcerer PSU because 1) I wasn't sure it would work with my outlets 2) if it broke I would have to deal with the manufacturer of a nobrand chinese power supply.

Compare to buying brands like Corsair or EGVA on Amazon/Walmart where returning your lemon is just a click away.

Excited to see/hear more from Canaan! Thanks for the updates everyone

when it breaks.  Check back on older threads here and you'll see that was my concern.
Bottom line:  You remove the front panel. There are two terminals where you can attach an external PSU
   and bypass  the internal.

Does anyone know if these A8 can comingle on the same controller as A741 or do they need their own?
The only difference between these miners appears to be the number of chips on each hash board.
(With exception of the A8 integrated power supply)

I don't believe the A8 model has an integrated power supply.  The last Chinese-only version of the A7 apparently did, but I don't see the same verbiage in the description of the A8.  Feel free to correct me.

my fuck up.  I copied the text for the 761 to the 8 series and forgot to remove the integrated PSU

821, 841  no integrated PSU
861  integrated
921  no integrated

You are correct. I think it was a copy paste issue from when they put up the 761, and bare bones description of the A8 information.

So don't go selling those power supplies yet

Yep My fuck up. cut and past issue
