I would suggest to do the opposite. Initial offering is the cheapest way to get into a promising coins. Just do your own research and investigate the people behind, plans if it is realistic, and the potential of the project. There are lots of investor that invest in an ICO that have earned alot. One of them is ETH, Waves i think is on its way up now, Lisk and the recent is Pesobit. Just stay away from cheap half baked ICO's. Though even this kind of ICO can possibly give you a huge profit.
If we get worth altcoin and I think it reliable to get invest of some our money. I tell you one example.
In the previous time, i was investing into the ROUND ico and in this period I get over five times for my investment fund and which mean not all of the ICO was becoming the wrong ways.
I may also think if there was a lot of fucking scam ico before. But this just depends on your research about the coin which one is worth for invest.
