In return, the EU has granted permission for Nord Stream 2 and they have removed the restrictions on Nord Stream 1. Anyway, I don't think that the Turkish stream will be ready by 2018.

It may be expensive, but if the government decides to close the valve to prove a point they can easily compensate Gazprom's losses. Russia has used Gazprom to threaten the EU before, when the US wanted to place their missile defense systems in Poland. Expensive or not, they might do it to prove a point.

The European Union needs gas, and there is no doubt about it. Now let's look at the sources:

1. Pipeline gas from Russia - Pipelines are already built, and Russia supplies around 170 billion cubic meters of gas every year.
2. Pipeline gas from Azerbaijan - Pipeline in construction. Expected to export as much as 17 billion cubic meters every year to the EU in near future.
3. Pipeline gas from Iran - in planning stage.
4. LNG from Qatar - Imports growing since 2008. Almost 200% more costlier than the Russian gas.

As you can see, the EU won't be independent of Russian gas anytime in the near future.
