It's Miller time!

Not sure it is worth it to try. Cost and otherwise to send you this cube.

BUT have a KNC 'supposedly' 'unrepairable' 2 dies' titan cube. When kNC got swamp'd with RMA's they gave folk a 'choice' of taking 2 1/2 working cubes
to replace one fully NOT working RMA cube sent in. OR you could wait as they 'nicely' put it 4-6 weeks MAYBE get a new fully working cube.

(really got to hand it to these guys..just typing this they can still piss me off) Sad

anyway it is DOWN to one working die at 325mh. If you want the challenge and it don't cost too much. I can send it to you for bragging rights. Bet you could fix it Smiley

bet they did not even try back at that point of time on the 'swamp of' RMA returned cubes them first couple of months....back in the day of 2014.

Say a RMA  Cube with 2 working dies comes in for replacement likely went right out the door in
the above 2 for one deal on a different RMA ..bingo bango.....(ah...KNC evil sure works)

anyway just thought you'd get a hoot out of this Smiley

Old Style Legacy Plug & Play BBS System. Get it from www.synchro.net. Updated 1/1/2021. It also works with Windows 10 and likely 11 and allows 16 bit DOS game doors on the same Win 10 Machine in Multi-Node! Five Minute Install! Look it over it uninstalls just as fast, if you simply want to look it over. Freeware! Full BBS System! It is a frigging hoot!:)

CRAP! Short summary, may be unstable after powering down and up. There may be a reason they disabled the dies. That's why testing includes powering everything down for 4 hours then a restart and retest before shipping :-)

Ug. Crap crap crap crap crap.

yep that's the one I'm talking about Smiley Then again all knc stuff is 'evil' thus they will try to make a 'break for it' and get lost in the mail ...effectively bricking themselves in the 'mail'
as a doorstop on some poor unsuspecting persons stoop......

again evil they are..Smiley

ah crap....as I sit here looking at the following parts

raspberry pi B+ 512mb

titan clone bridge (thanks qberty)

my knc Jupiter 550gh Nov 2013 4 port card with beagle bone still attached (must come off)

my Titan LCD gizmo from the 6 port Titan setup

the replacement (free) (new even) Corsair ax 1200i PSU from my 15 month RMA'd one that was 'fading' again
impressed with Corsair ..they could have refused warranty on 1) not ul listed equip and/or too exotic 2) normal
wear an tear on an titan ASIC 24/7 is not normal use....told them the truth even..they sent me new one w/o a
squeak)

my 1 die working Titan cube (30 ltc) I got to try NOT to blow up for this purpose

so heck if you get that new glen tarkin firmware out etc etc...I will then be 'compelled' to put this all
together and see if it works....(been stalling ...I'm a coward)

oh well.....at least I have the 'comfort' of ....if this works ...I will have brought forth .. a NEW evil KNC product
of the Titan variety...bruahahaha .... great we can MAYBE if this works 'spawn' new (I blame Qberty he was first
with the cloned titan board Smiley ) using Controller boards from
Jupiter/Saturn/Mercury/Neptune boards from day one to day last that were made to our 'evil' purposes

(digs out Voodoo for Dummies book....orders 5 gallon bucket of chicken entrails'  best to be prepared to 'appease'
the dark forces of this project I shall attempt Smiley

but again your firmware comes out I can no longer stall Sad

alas 'evil' never waits Smiley

pics shall be made available of

1) the fire damage/carnage etc (likely)

2) a working 'evil' newly hatched Titan Controller

sheesh I have to get out more Smiley

Question for ya all....

My Titan keeps causing my PSU's modular power connectors to eventually melt after like months and months of steady use. I think it may be because of crappy modular cable connectors n connections to the PSU.
The titan side of things - including the Y adapters remain in good shape.

So, Im wondering

Has anyone tried powering their Titans w/ one of these 2000w server PSU's using the breakout boards sold here on the forums to much success? Im just wondering if these breakout boards plus decent PCIe cables would be better for the Titan or not.
Looks like the controller board & pi would both have to still be powered by a seperate ATX psu to supply 5v ... is this ok to do?
Thanks

I used IBM 2880W w/ Finksy/J4bberwock board for months until I shipped the 2880W PSUs to a hosting place. I used J4bberwock 12V to 5V converter so ATX PSU wasn't needed. I now power each Titan with EVGA 1600W PSU, no issues for the last 2-3 months.

EVGA T2 and P2 are more efficient, IBM 2980W should be on par with the P2 w/o the fan pack, but you need fans to run 2980W PSU. My PDU shows 1 less amp after switching from 2 2880W to 1 EVGA T2 and 2 P2s for 3 Titans. I got the converter from Finksy, contact him to see if he has any left.

Also, do you know by any chance how that PSU would compare to the 2000w one? effeciency wise?

Not sure about 2000W PSU efficiency but I am sure somebody with info will chime in. I have IBM 2880, 2980 and 2000W server PSUs, only 2980W has platinum logo.

Question for ya all....

My Titan keeps causing my PSU's modular power connectors to eventually melt after like months and months of steady use. I think it may be because of crappy modular cable connectors n connections to the PSU.
The titan side of things - including the Y adapters remain in good shape.
By the way, when you melt the connector to the point where the board burns it's a bitch on wheels to fix.

Melting is caused by a couple of things. When you plug a miner in while the power is on, there is a little spark that happens because the miner's 12 volt caps are charging up from zero. Each spark leaves a nice pock mark on the plug or socket. Eventually that causes resistance which causes heat which causes more resistance.

The other issue is voltage. The cube is going to take a certain number of watts. When you start lowering th voltage below 12v due to cheap cabling, the current draw has to go up. Current is what generates heat in voltage drop situations (P=IE), so when you voltage drops to 10v the thing is now dropping 2v*20a=40w of heat along that line. Then it gets hotter resistance goes up, hilarity ensues.

Third thing is the interconnections between the PCIe connector and the Titan board, if you look at the ground lines on layer 1 and 6 you see that the PCIe pin goes to a via which connects to a very small set of four spider connectors to the ground plane. They do the same thing with +12, it's only a few mm, but as you heat up those pins you will start to burn out those spiders. Once one pin's spiders go the other spiders have to carry more of the load which burns those pins and you know where this leads.

Solution? You could run a supply with a massive amount of power, but remember those cubes don't have fuses in them so if something like a FET shorts inside a power supply you go from a simple *pop* to what could nicely be described as a small plasma fireball (see Amp Interrupt rating). This can then cause the phenolic on the board itself to conduct which will turn your unit into a 3,000 watt electric dryer in a 1 foot cube. This could then be described as "hilarious".

Or try dropping down the power. These units hash nicely at 60mh, do you really need 80+?

So, Im wondering

Has anyone tried powering their Titans w/ one of these 2000w server PSU's using the breakout boards sold here on the forums to much success? Im just wondering if these breakout boards plus decent PCIe cables would be better for the Titan or not.
Looks like the controller board & pi would both have to still be powered by a seperate ATX psu to supply 5v ... is this ok to do?
Thanks

I have tried the IBM 2980s server PSUs,  They say that they are Platinum rated but they ended up being less efficient than my ATX PSUs running the same cubes. Also the IBM 2980s were so loud that you could rear them outside with the doors and windows shut. Literally people asked me what that noise was. Also they needed the fans as they run hot. So I sold them. I strongly recommend whether you go with a server or ATX PSUs you go with go with at least Platinum or Titanium if you can find them. Then you should run them at about 50% to 60% of their rated capacity as there highest efficiency is around the 50% mark and fades from there. Running then at about 1/2 load also reduces stress on them and increases reliability. Better PSUs have better cables and connectors. I did see a post where the someone melted the PCI connectors on the 2980 Breakout boards. See my other post on PSUs I have some Rosewill Tachyon 1000 watt 80+ Platinum that have been running for over 12 months straight with 2 cubes on each and they have not had 1 connector go bad or burn, and their fans are not even running at about a 60% to 65% Load. See my other posting on PSUs. I am also working on putting together a Titanium Server PSU solution that will run at 96% if anyone else is interested.

All I can say is running my 'evil Titans' full out (hey it was what I was told by knc techies back in the day 15 months ago ....that 90-95c was fine...could go to 100c briefly also no
issues...overclock to 325mh to make up for dies dead (my unit 2 dies dead 1 per cube..would not RMA .thus 306.1mh so over 300mh knc did not have to rma anything)

ok so anyway I have NOT burnt out any connectors from my (both new and used) orig NOV 2014 units

I'm supposedly from folk ont here using a good platinum type power supply a Corsair AX 1200i Platinum 16 awg wire (not sure what the corsair ax 1500i uses but use ribbon format
thus I'd stick to ax 1200i just my view...the ax 1200i round/cloth covered ..not the side by side ribbon version)

Also as mentioned here...one went out after 15 months...I even told Corsair the truth..they could have gotten out of it as not normal wear and tear (24/7 15 months) and
not a legit computer use (Swedish titan asic miner prob not UL listed lol) Smiley I figured they'd say no anyway so I just told the truth and surprise

new unit was sent to me ..ka ching Smiley

so anyway really impressed with Corsair tech support and the rma process and replacement unit 7 years warranty and labor my only cost was 40 bucks insurance/tracking
to sent it back usps

so anyway my setup below in basement also may help cooler in summer and def great heat the house winter...so my environment may play a part in all this too

lostgonzo.imgur.com

kick ass work shop table by the by ...will likely get another for the making of my basement shop in old cistern basement room  project ...Sam's club and Menard's closet rack kit below fyi Smiley

The ONLY heat issue I have had and addressing is 3rd party set of 4 y adapters I had to use BEFORE knc shipped their y adapters.....started to get HOT...compared to
the knc y adapter types....so I replaced with the above NEW never used knc y adapters....I'd assume that maybe 15 months ANY Y adapter might start to go at that point...so something else to consider on your rigs for heat issues and your psu's swap these puppies out see if it helps Smiley

In my case seemed to help a lot  and viola just warm to the touch again..all 4 I replaced NOT hot to the touch at all ...no other changes then the swap out...

anyway a further consideration on this heat/plug/hot y adapter and cube plug titan issues

anyway ....likely you need something of a server psu in the hosting area..but all i know about my 'lack' of issues on my overclocked as hell evil knc miners for the last 15 months

this includes the used unit too I got in march his is even worse....fried the paint on the top of all the cubes! ..and his cubes run the best! go figure Smiley

again likely I am an 'exception' but just saying

edit: the above being said 'when' gen tarkin gets his 'self adjusting' version of the firmware out and it says 'you fool throttle your titans down' ( i really want to see you add that error message at some setting) Smiley I will likely let it pick the speed/hash/voltage or whatever voodoo is approprate.....mine have been going full out under the 'delusion' that knc knew wtf they were talking about (in truth overclocking did work so far and nicely heated my house too boot this winter also heh) Smiley

so anyway ...I'll let your firmware run see what it tells me to 'run' these cubes at etc on both machines....and stop the titan asic abuse......with that upgrade Smiley
