Hi everyone,

I'm trying to set up Cgminer on a shiny new install of Ubuntu 12.04.

I've installed the AMD SDK packages, put the *.h files into Cgminer's ADK folder and I've got all of the dependencies mentioned in the README.

When I try to build Cgminer
Code:
CFLAGS="-o2 -Wall -march=native" ./configure
It stops here:
Code:
checking whether the C compiler works... no
configure: error: in `/home/slick/cgminer-2.11.3':
configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables

Any help/hints would be greatly appreciated as I am Linux noobie. I figured this would be a good project to get me more familiar, since I'll have to start using Linux more for work soon.

I think this is the most relevant part of the config file (the entire thing is at the bottom):
Code:
gcc version 4.6.3 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.3-1ubuntu5)
configure:3796: $? = 0
configure:3785: gcc -V >&5
gcc: error: unrecognized option '-V'
gcc: fatal error: no input files
compilation terminated.
configure:3796: $? = 4
configure:3785: gcc -qversion >&5
gcc: error: unrecognized option '-qversion'
gcc: fatal error: no input files
compilation terminated.
configure:3796: $? = 4
configure:3816: checking whether the C compiler works
configure:3838: gcc -o2 -Wall -march=native   conftest.c  >&5
configure:3842: $? = 0
configure:3880: result: no
configure: failed program was:
| /* confdefs.h */
| #define PACKAGE_NAME "cgminer"
| #define PACKAGE_TARNAME "cgminer"
| #define PACKAGE_VERSION "2.11.3"
| #define PACKAGE_STRING "cgminer 2.11.3"
| #define PACKAGE_BUGREPORT "kernel@kolivas.org"
| #define PACKAGE_URL ""
| #define PACKAGE "cgminer"
| #define VERSION "2.11.3"
| /* end confdefs.h.  */

Here's the whole config file:
Code:
This file contains any messages produced by compilers while
running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

It was created by cgminer configure 2.11.3, which was
generated by GNU Autoconf 2.69.  Invocation command line was

Transactions must be included in a block to be properly completed. When you send a transaction, it is broadcast to miners. Miners can then optionally include it in their next blocks. Miners will be more inclined to include your transaction if it has a higher transaction fee.

Take a reaaaaally good look at that and the readme.

This is like one of those iSpy books -- i really don't see it

Is it that the o is not capitalized?

Anyhow, I just doing a clean install of Ubuntu -- seems like a solid option before I *gasp* go crawling back to windows

I'm trying the same thing right now. Ubuntu 12.1. Trying to get away from XP 32bit.

I can't get the display drivers installed before the graphics card gets flaky. I have tried 3 different Linux versions.

Hi pccs,

I ended up getting it working after doing a clean install of linux and then following the instructions from the beginning.

What kind of problems, exactly, are you having?

The order you should do things is:
  • Install linux (while connected to the internet so that you can download any/all updates)
  • Update your graphics card drivers (either by downloading them directly from ATI or using the hardware tool in Ubuntu)
  • Install the AIT ADK/SDK
  • Build and install cgminer

I'm interpreting your problem as having your graphics fail before you're able to install the drivers correctly. This is a bit odd, since linux should automatically use some low-level driver that I think would be pretty stable. Nonetheless, you should be able to get into Ubuntu's recovery mode (I think you hit "Shift" or "e" as the computer boots) and then enable networking and drop into a root prompt. Once you're there, you can probably use apt-get to install the ATI drivers.

If none of this makes sense to you, do some googling and then post back here (or PM me) if you run into a wall. I'm a linux n00b, but I did manage to get my setup working after much hair-pulling.

Finally found the problem, my display cable didn't like Ubuntu for some reason but it worked fine with XP. Changed the cable and got rid of the problem. Just need to get CGMiner running now. I had a problem last night, I think I was trying to install the 64 bit and I should be using the 32 bit build. Gonna try that later today, had a funky error and made a post about it last night but no response yet. There was something in the CGMiner instructions about installing the ATI driver in a system directory. Maybe I installed it in the wrong place. I haven't even installed my 7970 yet, gonna try to get it working with my 6450 first. Hopefully I can just plug in the 7970 and it will work lol.

Congrats on your system set-up. Whats the hash rate?

I'm really starting to like Ubuntu, haven't used Linux since 1997! I got my music back(30G) on a drive that was courrupted under XP, my cpu temp is running about 12C cooler and  my graphics card is running 15-20C cooler also! This is just tested watching a video on Youtube. I installed the sensors app, used to use Speccy on XP.

I need to find a replacement for Photoshop and I'll be all set, I think. Wish I could afford to just get a whole new box dedicated to mining. I think I might change the Ubuntu GUI(Desktop) also.

Cool, Gimp installed, even opens up psd files:)

OK, back to CGMiner ..... hopefully by the end of the day I'll be posting the hash rates:)

I just can't get Ubuntu 12.1 to work, not sure if it's my hardware or just me.

Not sure if I should try the 7950, and take out the 6450 or try Ubuntu 12.04.

I'm using Ubuntu 12.04

My hash rate with cgminer is 400 kH/s (litecoin) with a 6950

I was never able to get cgminer to find the ADK and, as a result, can't see fan and temperature info from within the program. I can see it by querying the ati driver directly, though, so I have been able to keep track of everything.

For a while my card was running up at 99 degrees (yikes!). I jammed a new fan in front of it and took the side of the case off. Now it's running around 80.

If you look in the source directory, cgminer's configu looks for the ADK header files in ADK_SDL so....

/cgminer-3.0.0/ADL_SDK/

Should have something like:
adl_defines.h  adl_sdk.h  adl_structures.h  readme.txt

then a configure --enable-adl should find it.

This is like one of those iSpy books -- i really don't see it

Is it that the o is not capitalized?

Anyhow, I just doing a clean install of Ubuntu -- seems like a solid option before I *gasp* go crawling back to windows

grep native README

I'm reposting in an old thread because I too experienced the following error message. I googled the error message and it brought me here, so hopefully I can help out anyone else who is experiencing this error.
Code:
configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables

First, as for the original post, the "o" needed to have been a capital letter "O" (and not the number zero), as the cgminer readme says. It's best to copy & paste these commands from the readme into the terminal.
Code:
CFLAGS="-O2 -Wall -march=native" ./configure <options>

As for my situation, on my Raspberry Pi, using cgminer 3.8.1, I had to add sudo to the command:
Code:
CFLAGS="-O2 -Wall -march=native" sudo ./configure <options>

So, the readme file is correct with its instructions. It's just that in my case, I needed to run the command as a superuser for the C compiler to work.
