Is there a way to use dropbox or similar product and still get some king of a safe wallet following me around?

I am sorry in advance if this question been answered previously, But this is a long thread!
What is the disadvantages of using online wallet like Blockchain  for example? Of course they could fold tomorrow but I mean in term of actual security and encryption.

Thanks. good post. basically confirms my understanding of wallet security.
Do I have this right though? -- you want to avoid having the wallet unencrypted in RAM
for even an instant and thus the involved process of booting off the USB.

Personally looking forward to bitcoin-central (now being revamped as 'paytunia') to offer proper insurance on their deposits.

Technically... the site operators have access to the wallet.dat created for your online wallet because it resides on their servers.
Some online wallets don't even use such methods and instead use a shared wallet.
Some of the better online wallets i would say are good for simple daily usage... but I would suggest it for any kind of long term storage.

Awesome info, thanks!

I already installed my client, I'll have to figure out how to handle this before I move any serious money into it.

Fun, and useful.

I guess sometime I will have enough BTC to warrant such precautions.

Here's hoping...

I have my bitcoins stored in separate paper wallets. Is there a way to occasionally check their balances without importing the private key to a website?

@just1

Yes - blockchain.info allows you to assign a "watch-only" address. You can then keep an eye on the balance without them (or you) having the ability to spend it. When/if you're ready to spend, you just import the private key.

What is the issue with using something like armory? The problem with the bitcoin client is that it takes forever to sync the blockchain. Am I missing something here. The issue is air gapping to prevent online intrusion and encryption to prevent offline intrusion.
