Wallet security seems like one of the more major problems for the general population to use BitCoins, especially considering the unability to recover stolen BitCoins. It seems like Credit Card Fraud squared, if BitCoins were to become really popular.

Although, from a purely theoretical view (and one that most hardcore BitCoin users would oppose), it might be possible to create a central institute then, which could oversee which BitCoins are "legit" and which are reported "stolen".

I suggest everyone use this no matter how little amount of bitcoins you have. When i first started with bitcoins I was sent a wallet stealer and the next day I didn't have any coins left in my wallet. Completely swiped.

Me, my style is to secure my important bitcoin address.

I downloaded the open source code of bitaddress.org (just html and javascript) and open it OFFLINE in my PC browser to generate bitcoin address and private key.

Print the address and private key information. (BTC address record is printed in paper, secure this copy)

Close the bitaddress page.

So this address has no record in my PC, then I can use to fund this new address.

If I want to use it, I use electrum client to add the private key, then send some fund to other BTC address, after that I delete it in the wallet.

Just my style of securing my btc.

question though, could a Virtual machine work just as well? and basically Totally lock down that virtual machine so nothing and Nothing can access that information unless you boot it up?
i feel like this would be possible too, yes a usb idea is much greater but if you just move the Virtual machine over to a flash drive Disconnect from the internet or something on a different computer and access it that way? i could be just making up some dumb crap but hell, might as well put some effort into getting out of the newbiee SECTION..

I'm not sure if it's already been mentioned in these 33 pages of posts (sorry I was lazy and didn't read it through) but wouldn't the most secure wallet on creation be the one that's put on a USB stick (encrypted or not) then shoved in a bank safe deposit box.

Nothing beats physical security offered by the brick & mortar people that have been securely holding stuff for decades.
