Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

I actually did this on my own. Was considering maybe posting a tutorial. Glad to see someone already did this, and thanks!

May I suggest TAILS for the live CD/USB you are describing? http://tails.boum.org/

I don't have any experience running any bitcoin software on it but it seems like a good candidate :-)

NOTE: bitcoin is not included yet; http://tails.boum.org/todo/include_bitcoin

This reminds me... I made a backup of my wallet a few days ago, but when I needed it I had already forgotten the PW for the flash-drive, after some digging around I found a recovery key in an encrypted zip on my encrypted partition.  In short I've finally restored my wallet.  Grin

Note: Some people forget really important things, I'm one of them. Embarrassed

I find it simpler to just regularly send my bitcoins to my mtgox account. I've got a yubikey which makes it more secure.
