Laptop broke, now got the backup on usb but have no clue how to import it!?

"Hey guys, a friend of mine bought some bitcoins around January. His laptop is broken now but he has got an backup on his usb. One .txt file which has his bitcoin adress in it and one .dat file named BTC.dat ."

What programm do I need to download in order to import it back into it to get the coins.

BTC.dat perhaps should be named wallet.dat and be in the default location, which on linux is ~/.bitcoin/wallet.dat
or import the private key if that is what the .txt is.

Import is commandline only I think and simple to do..
bitcoind importprivkey "5yourveryveryveryverylongprivatekeystring"


Bitcoin address is not the same as the private key though.. he needs to have backuped the wallet and perhaps did that from the GUI saved as a BTC.dat name that he would recognize.

Just to say it can take a while for the process. It takes me a few seconds for importprivkey to do it.

On Windows 7 you need to place your backup(wallet.dat) in C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\Bitcoin. Make sure you don't overwrite anything in there.

This, there should be a wallet.dat there, rename it wallet2.dat and put the backup wallet.dat file in that folder.

Do yourself a favor, and make a gmail email address for the sole purpose of storing your wallet.dat file. Email the ENCRYPTED wallet.dat file to your new email address, and leave it there forever. You'll be glad you did one day.
