It has been running for several hours and still is not completed. What does it mean? Here is a screenshot:

It will take overnight. Unless you are doing solo mining, or planning to store private keys in your local computer wallet - downloading the blockchain is waste of space. Just get an address at blockchain.info - and remember to turn on most of the safety features, and take backup of wallet in encrypted form.

It means it is downloading the whole blockchain, 8 GB of transactions. The Bitcoin-qt node is a full node, it will download the whole blockchain.

If you prefer, get a lightweight client like Multibit, much much faster  Wink Full nodes are required for the bitcoin network to work, but if you run your client only some minutes each day there is no need to have it  Wink
