I have been trying for a WEEK to get 1,000 USD to some kind of an exchange to buy some bitcoins.  I sent a bank wire on Monday to MtGox and still nothing.  I have heard bitinstant is having lots of problems right now too.

What do you guys recommend?  What is your favorite way to purchase a bitcoin?

It is a common myth that Bitcoin is ruled by a majority of miners. This is not true. Bitcoin miners "vote" on the ordering of transactions, but that's all they do. They can't vote to change the network rules.

I see you point but I'm not looking to make a quick buck.  I want to get in because I believe in it.

It just incredibly frustrating that I can't even get to the point where I can buy a bitcoin.
