The following link for downloading the multibit linux version is very slow

is there a mirror / alternate URL

No there is only the multibit.org machine to download from.
It has a 100 Mb/s network card so you probably caught it when it was servicing a number of requests.

Downloads are at about 100 GB per day out of a theorectical max of 1 TB.

The 0.5.9 code is about 10 MB per download rather than 30 MB so that will help for a while.
