I don't want to double post, but it's going to get harder and harder to mine for bitcoins and actually produce any.  There's too much hardware about to be released.

i have a regular dell desktop coputer but I am aware that I will need to buy additional hardware, I am just not exactly sure what to buy

With these newfangled mining chips coming out, I dunno if I even want to get into mining. I think I'm making more a day by daytrading anyway.

good luck mining is only for those who can afford and time and money! It is a long long long term investment!

For some of us mining is the only way to get into trading, it's incredibly difficult to get your dollars into trading markets like BTC or mtgox
