Hey guys, can we please have a way to set the location from the URL? That would make it super nice and easy to embed, with the starting location being something meaningful for locally-focused websites.

Thanks

There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, which will follow the rules of the network no matter what miners do. Even if every miner decided to create 1000 bitcoins per block, full nodes would stick to the rules and reject those blocks.

Map will center on current viewer's geo location. Adding location to URL was supported in the past but interfered with Clustering plugin so I turned it off.

Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents and say that I think the clustering radius is too large right now. Right now, every time you zoom in, there is a fairly substantial reorganization of the locations on the map, and it's hard to really see where Bitcoin businesses are located.

Does anybody else feel this way? Could we reduce the clustering strength/radius by 20-40%?

This project should be so much more active. We are at 3100 locations now? Bitpay has 20k customers. I'm sure there must be more than 3k that should be pinable to a map. Every pin on that map is a selling argument when evangelizing Bitcoin to your local shop.
On the other hand I wouldn't want to stress the OSM project with our bitcoin spam. payment:Visa would also be a valid key that is barely used, at least compared to how many places actually accept Visa. No idea what the official take on bitcoin on OSM is.

No idea what the official take on bitcoin on OSM is.

Initially when I started adding to the map, i got a PM from a senior editor who requested to know where I had that info from. He was quite concerned about "copy&paste" from Google maps, which is not permitted (I know... I know...). Other than that he seemed to be fine with it, as long as it's a brick and mortar business, i.e. something that actually _is_ at that location that accepts bitcoin.

Hey guys,

I've created http://www.localcoinalert.com.  It uses OSM data like coinmap.org but you sign up and specify a location and it will email you when any locations get added near that location ( radius of 50 miles ).  One-time price: 1mBTC.  Let me know what you think or if you think there is any thing that you think should be improved or is missing, I love feedback.

Your post is considered spam and taking over the thread. Make your own thread and discretely point there please. Else, I would like to have a bigger radius. Maybe report daily the 5 closest changes? Something like "Cool Café (3.5km) stopped accepting Bitcoin, Blaaa internet (12km) started, Fooo Café (700km) started, … "

Edit: The screen looks like it might or might not work for my address with no way to check prior to giving you my email address!?!?
Edit 2: https://blockchain.info/address/1MsG8sijd1P2FXiSkAYJGSVKP7oqc28W4B yet coinbase says it doesn't let me in and I have not seen yet what I'm paying for? Seriously? I'm of the "I vet everything" crew but don't expect others to do that.
Edit 3: No way to change my location for my life-long subscription? No way to cancel my life-long subscription? Announcement to tell me about opening but not about closing shops?

Is there a way to filter and get the locations/merchants in a JSON for a specific country?

"instantly" as in "within minutes". Just be patient. If you go edit OSM and see it without typo, it should work at some point.

Add to your site some form mailer to request to be added for the less geeky shop owners and please ask bitpay to advertise this to all its clients. In fact bitpay should offer to add them anyway free of charge.

I got a good idea on improving your site. Allow ATM operators to list the locations of their machines on your coinmap. Perhaps make a different icon for ATMs.
