Wusssssup everyone.  I know there a lot of threads on this, and I have read a lot of them.  But i'd like some second opinion.  Here is the thing - I have a 100amp box in my house (in the garage).  my rigs are in the garage.  So far, i'm on 120v because everything was setup for that, etc, and i was adding rigs little by little.  I am pretty much maxed out or soon will be (insofar as amperage is concerned).  So I have only 2 spaces left (well one, but i'll take one breaker out).  I was thinking of putting a 240v 60 Amp breaker there, to a second box with 2 30amp 240v breakers.  Then get 2x24amp PDU's, each on its own socket, and then 5-6 rigs on each PDU.  Also I need to put a surge protector board thing at the breaker.  For exhausting heat, I was thinking simply buying a high cfm window fan, or one of those commercial ones with flexible ducting that I can tape to the window.  they run 100-150$.  I have no intake really, so all the air will be drawn from the basement, with windows open in other rooms.

What do you guys think ?  I'm going to hire a cheap electrician my friend knows, I dont want to fuck with my insurance policy.  Plus I would need a permit for the second box.  god damn.

That's not how they work.

If the panel is 100 amps. that's all you get.
you can't put 5 20ampers in there then think you can add 60 because you have room.

That's a good way to either
a. blow breaker in house
b. burn down garage. and attached home.

You need to add up what is being used and see if you are maxed.
Swapping everything to 240 would help reduce draw on the wires. but you will still not get more than 100amps 240.

A pic of the panel, or list of breakers? Maye what power suppliers you have?
Are all of the 15 amp breakers at 80%?

May be time to move to server grade.

Yeah all my stuff is 80% max of load on the breakers.  Main breaker is 100 amps.  Stuff in house, maybe I reserve 50-60 amps for the whole house.  But the stuff isnt on always at the same time.  Worst case I won't use the dryer with the electric stove Smiley  Right now I have about 2x15amp and 1x20amp full with rigs, but on 120v.  Plus like 4 gpus spread out on two circuits (with tv and with computer room).  So i'm "maxed out" in the sense that i'm using 80% of 50 amps for mining on 120v, so roughly 4.5kw or something.  I was thinking of taking all that out, and swapping it with 240v.  I said 60 amps because I didnt see any 50 amps for sale, but i found one.  So since 240v takes 2 spaces, I would put a 50amp, then a 20amp and 30amp breaker in a separate box.  So unless I really dont get it, if I can put 4.8kw/50amp on 120v, for the same amperage I can put 9.6kw no?

When you say server grade, you mean 3 phase power ?  hmmm well I should consider that If I change the panel to 200amps or more.  But that gets $$$ costly.

No sever grde psu's still run on 220. not 3 phase.
As for your upgrades, I would get a certified electrician to come in. tell him you want to install servers and how many plugs can he give you

You get to pull more watts with 240 volts.

Your idea works if the 100 amp breaker box will allow a 240 volt breaker.

My 100 amp box was altered in such a way that only 1 240 volt breaker could be placed in the box.

Maybe your box will allow a 240 breaker .

If you put in a 60 amp and send it to second box with two 30 amp breakers then to two 30 amp pdus.

Your could run just under 6000 watts a pdu.

Or 12000 watts or 8 s9s and 2 r4s

That is 4 s9s and 1 r4 each pdu.

Now I can tell you running that much gear needs lots of fan action it is close to 47000 btus.

Also. You need 6 gauge from old box 60 amp breaker to the new box  and 10 gauge from the 30 amp breakers to the pdus.

It leaves you 40 amps for the home. Not much .

I have a 32 slot 150 amp box.  Up grade from 100 amp 24 slot box.

I have run 2 30 amp circuits with two 30 amp pdus.

1 pdu at 23 amps
1 pdu at 11 amps

And that reaches heat limits not power limits.

Even in winter just too hot.
I am running 13/14 amps for my gpu rigs in house.
And 30 amps at the solar array for s9 r4 Avalon 721 at the solar array.

We will boost 5 amps a month as the days get longer at the array.

And I will move gear out of the house since summer in my home gets hot and power rates raise.

wow thanks for the detailed answer.  That's a lot of heat indeed.  The solar array is quite frankly, impressive.  Yeah it doesnt leave much for the house...but It should be ok.

So I started calculating costs...I figure instead of changing my 120v to 240v, and adding capacity, I could just leave it like it is and transform my 30 amp dryer for a couple rigs.  I saw they sell these adapters that can switch between dryer and outlets, so I can still wear clean clothes Smiley  I can't condemn the dryer.  Just one PDU 30 amps to 30amps socket and its easy.  Its a small room with one window so its going to be 4 rigs max probably.

But i'm not decided yet.  It would be better to have everything in the garage, hook up a big fan with the flexible exhaust, shoot that out the window.  Intake would be from all other open windows in the basement.  But then I start saying to myself...why spend money to put a box...why not change the 100amp to 200amp Smiley  etc.  If I had the money I would.

I'm going to sleep on it for a few weeks.  Really appreciate the info.

 That should be practical, just remember to shut the rigs down BEFORE you swap the power to the drier.

 Losing their output for a couple hours a week (probably less unless you have a LARGE household) isn't going to be a noticeable drop in their mining throughput for a month.

Yeah that's a good tip Smiley  Thanks for the input guys, I think i'll go shop for an adapter at home depot soon enough, well, when I get enough money saved up for more rigs.
