Which one would you recommend for a home user who is just starting out in mining?

As far as I understand from the comments,

Avalon, better in terms of price and durability
Antminer is better in terms of Hash Rate and electricity consumption

how much do you pay in electricity?, is noise an issue?

Since you are just starting out I'd go with Avalons. Until you get several miners running you just cannot afford having a miner fail and so far we are seeing very few (if any) reports of the Avalon miners failing. As I've said before, I've had very good luck with my s9's but -- many folks here have not.

-Joshua Zipkin aka Joshua Alexander leaked AMT A1 miner skype chats http://bit.ly/1Qjt6lj
-For bitcoin to succeed the community must police itself.

Avalon is more durable and reliable, however the hashrates they manage and the efficiency are definitely not as good as the Bitmain boards. On the other hand, Bitmain's cards (especially their more recent ones) are known for defects and failures.

avalon 721 = .17 watts a gh

bitmain s9  = .11 watts a gh on the older ones  the newer ones are .12 watts a gh

S5 and S7 never failed on me, out of the 15 hashboards of my 5 S9's 7 have failed (for the moment), and outside the warranty period is +/- 200 usd + shipping for repair each board, so you could end up having to pay up to 600 usd on top off the price of the miner. I have a couple of S9's and T9's on the way, let's see if bitmain corrected the problem, at least now they come with 180 days warranty, instead of 90, we will see...

hi ANTZ25
can we know what is the batch of S9 who have had failed hashboards?
it could be useful for users who want to buy used ASIC

there are few review of this product... but seems interesting...
the power/hash/s and usd/gahash ratio are very similar...
any failure reeport about 721 vs 741?

Yeah they were the beginning of all my troubles with bitmain s9's

but the r4's

I got two of them  a bad board on one after 50 days.  the other had a bad fan  the day I got it.  the fan works  but loudly.  so it will break sooner then later.

The entire point of the  r4 is a quiet fan   and I got sent a  loud one.

this is surely useful to us!!!
Most auctions not report this information, but now we can ask for it and know if the miner is good or not

do not even try buying used S9's, I just had to send back a repaired board, so now the "repaired" ones are starting to re-fail, I was lucky it failed less than 30 days after I received it so I only had to pay the shipping, still sucks. I do have still running S5's and S7's, never had an issue, and the S5's and the previous S3's I owned where all used from ebay, NEVER had an issue, that's why I like to think is a line problem, they just screw up the design on the S9. Have a T9 running, only been 48 hours, let's see what happens.

could be usefull understand how many S5, S7 and S9 they have sold...
maybe with S9 volume, they are gone out of they production capacity, leaving out the quality...

Yeah the smaller chips have more issues.  Even Intel CPUs have had more rmas with the i7 6700k and the i5 6500k chips.  The second chip in small size for Intel is the i7 7700k and i5 7500k so far they don't have reports of major fail.
My thoughts are bitmain would follow this way with next chip. A same size 14/16. But one that works better the the s9 chip.

My avalons just work. I added a third one a 721 which is lower priced.  They sent it with the new fan it does lower noise a bit.

any Avalon 741 on your farm???
there are few review of this product... but seems interesting...
the power/hash/s and usd/gahash ratio are very similar...
any failure reeport about 721 vs 741?

I have a dozen 741s running so far they are working great. They do have a wider hashing range than the Avalon 6s. I agree that they average 7.3TH at the pool.
