do not even try buying used S9's, I just had to send back a repaired board, so now the "repaired" ones are starting to re-fail, I was lucky it failed less than 30 days after I received it so I only had to pay the shipping, still sucks. I do have still running S5's and S7's, never had an issue, and the S5's and the previous S3's I owned where all used from ebay, NEVER had an issue, that's why I like to think is a line problem, they just screw up the design on the S9. Have a T9 running, only been 48 hours, let's see what happens.

could be usefull understand how many S5, S7 and S9 they have sold...
maybe with S9 volume, they are gone out of they production capacity, leaving out the quality...
this could be a reading key!

getting info from bitmain is impossible, I don't even know what is the problem with the boards, they just charge you 200$-300$ for "hashboard repair" and when you ask them what was the problem, I have the right to now why I'm been charge that, they give bull$hit excuses, maybe is just the pic µC that need it reprogramming, who knows? still, bum, 300$...

I'm debating between the Avalon 741 and the Antminer T9.

However, based on availability the A 741 wins by default since we can't order the T9 directly from Bitmain at the moment.

Also, for those of you who have Avalon miners, did you guys get a AvalonMiner Controller? Do you think it's worth it?  I'm planning to start off with about 4 Miners.

You can use older cheaper rasp pi

Just get a good 8gb sd card. If you have the rasp pi 1 b

Or a good 8gb micro card if you have the rasp pi 2 b plus.

I have two controllers the new one and the old one both work okay.

Ditto ^^
Just remember that either way you have to also have a 5vdc supply for the RasPi. The controller from Canaan does not come with one. Most any 5v USB charger will do, 1A or more preferred, used with a USB-A (charger side) to micro-USB (RasPi) cord.

Looks nice... since it is directly powered by the AC line, I wonder how it's hold-up time is? Most small off-line UPS's switch in under 10ms so longer that would be a definite plus.

reason: With the Avalon's what is important to keep alive is the RasPi. The PSU's for the miners can fend for themselves. So far with mine I had the power go out for ~5sec last night. The RasPi is on a UPS (a REALLY nice 3KVA always on-line one from CyberPower mainly feeding a S9) and never blinked while the main PSU dropped out and of course came back up when AC power did. Miner recovered just fine on its own within a minute or so.

Thanks guys for the tips, I've got a spare raspberry pi laying around, I'll be looking into it.

BTW, for those of you in the US, how long did Avalon take to ship a 721/741?  Did you guys have to pay extra for customs or anything?

I added to cart and the only option for shipping that they offered was Fedex.

Sunday to Friday.

Tax maybe due to the order being catorigized as aluminum casting not a pc.

Pc is tax free up to 2500 usd.  I am still trying to not pay fedex and it has been quite a hard job for them to correct it.
Lots of crap forms etc.

Ah I see, that's pretty quick coming from over seas, roughly 5 days?

Yeah that's a pretty hefty price of $70 added to the total cost. Was that per unit? Or for the whole order?

Canaan has fixed the FedEx/Customs fee problem.
Now both the order and package information clearly state "Data processing unit' for the miners and 'data server' for the RasPi controllers along with stating the correct shipping codes.

yeah nice of them to do that.  while they are at it they could send me the 70 for their error.  as I am tired of fighting with fedex over the fees.

@philipma1957

You know about the mining issue. I wanted to get information about Avalon and AntMiner as they are popular. But are there other brands besides these two products?
Are there any other devices you can recommend for mining?

Ah, so there's no more custom's charge from them for a miner?  What if you ordered multiple miners? Is there a threshold or limit like philipma mentioned?  Like, customs free up to $2500?  Anyone happen to have insight on this?

btw, @philipma thanks for sharing your insight earlier man, hope fedex makes it right with that customs charge.

and @notfuzzywarm, thanks for passing a long that tidbit.

If marked as a pc 2500 usd and under is free.

At this moment.  I have more then 140 usd in fedex bills on my ant miners and Canaan gear.

I have yet to get the bills corrected.
I may just pay rather then get my 820 plus credit rating fucked with.

That's where I'm confused, so, since each miner is less than $2500, than it should be duty free for each unit?  But let's say you order 4x 721 miners (I'll say they are $700 a piece to make the math simple), then the total is 4x $700= $2800 total.... but each machine was less than $2500(since they are $700 a piece), will you get charged for duty customs? Are you charged on the total of the package shipped?

...if so, then I suppose it's more prudent to say... order 3 units at a time... or does it not work like that? haha... just trying to understand how it works.

Btw, that's a bummer man, but I can understand, if you have perfect credit you wouldn't want to dent it with a small dispute, even if they're wrong.

Duty is charged based on total value of what is being brought in, NOT per-item. And if you are thinking about splitting the orders so each order is under the limit -- at least spread them out over a few days so they do not get processed by customs at the same time otherwise they WILL be treated as one shipment.
