So I just built a new computer and I realized that my bitcoins are on my old computer's hard drive and hooked it up now. I downloaded the bitcoin client and I'm just wondering how I move the coins to my new hard drive/wallet? I went into /roaming and found the wallet.dat file, but I'm kind of unsure about what to do.

Thanks.

Just transfer the wallet.dat file in the roaming folder of the old computer to the same location on the new computer after installing the client.

Overwrite the wallet.dat file from the new install.

Job done.

Or if you are unsure just send all the bitcoin on the old computer to a new address in the wallet on the new computer.

I would also copy across the blockchain download and save yourself a few hours.

I see it's somewhat answered, I will make it clearer and safer:

If you installed and started Bitcoin qt on the new computer, please check if you have wallet.dat in the same location as in the old computer.
If that happens, then copying the old wallet.dat (with an USB stick) over the new wallet.dat should do the trick.

Just please make sure:
1. You backup both wallet.dat files, to make sure you don't overwrite the good wallet.dat with an empty one and because a backup is always good.
2. You stop both bitcoin qt before doing this.

You can do this even if it's not synced.

Just transfer the wallet.dat file in the roaming folder of the old computer to the same location on the new computer after installing the client.

Or if you are unsure just send all the bitcoin on the old computer to a new address in the wallet on the new computer.

Thanks, do you know where the wallet.dat file is in bitcoin core? I have a pretty old bitcoin client from my old hard drive from 2009 I think, but I'm not sure where to find it now.

edit: I tried opening the bitcoin wallet from my old hard drive that I have hooked up to this computer and apparently it's 4 years behind and downloading something (and there are no bitcoins in the wallet)? I was able to see how many bitcoins I had using this hard drive before I rebuilt a new computer with a newer version of windows, etc.

I wouldn't need a usb stick because I have the hard drive plugged in to this computer as well. I can't access it normally anymore because the OS isn't compatible with my motherboard though, I just can access the files.

The thing is that I can't find the wallet.dat file for the new version of bitcoin core that I just downloaded for windows 10 to replace with the old wallet.dat file that I was able to locate on my old hard drive.

EDIT: I managed to find the wallet.dat file, apparently the roaming folder is "hidden" on windows 10, just needed to view hidden files and copy and pasted wallet.dat to be good to go. Thanks for the help everyone!
