Of course it is possible. Everyone who is connected to Blockchain make good thing, because is working for all network. The thing is that simple desktop don't have chance to hit block... With this difficulty like we have right now.

I would say no.

You can not make even a mbtc in a week mining. It is not possible.
Maybe if you mine alt coin since they are looking for support they will allow to gather more in a short amount of time then try your luck on seeing how much you can get for them exchanging into btc.

Is it still possible to mine for bitcoins using a normal desktop computer nowadays?

the answer is no, i think you should buy some hardware like antminer s9 for mining bitcoin or avalon, asics hardware to mining scrypt coins, or buy video card for mining other coins because your desktop computer can not to use for mining the coins. my suggestion is use some video cards on your computer and then you can mining coins beside litecoin and dogecoin, there are many coins that will give you profit as long as you know what coins that work for you. its really hard to mining bitcoin with your desktop computer without using any hardware inside the computer because bitcoin itself have high difficulty to mine.

Yes it is Possible But Now a Days It's not Profitable Because Now a Days Even Mining is not Profitable Because you will get just 12.5 BTC for Solving a Block now and it will not Cover your Expenses So I Suggest you to Never do Mining with a Desktop, Do it with a Hardware.......

Even if it were a little bit profitable it would never last for long. There is always some huge mining farm that will just totally destroy you and your mining will be worthless. That's the problem with mining even with asics.thise farms just take over.

If you were to mine something nowdays, you'd be better off going with some alt-coin rather than the bitcoin. The difficulty is too much and you'll need an expensive equipment and money for the huge electricity bill.

No. Nowadays you need expensive specialized equipment in order to mine any substantial amount of Bitcoin. You also need low electricity prices in order to turn a profit.

And that is the big reason why we are not doing it. Had it been possible then all of us can be mining using our desktop at millions of homes worldwide. I am wishing though that there would be a coin which is decentralized and democratized allowing people at their homes to do mining and make some money. I have seen some programs like this but all of them either failed or really scam right from the very start. It would have been a very good idea.

It had not been possible after bitcoins reached $5 and some USB sticks came into existence to evolve the technology higher by increasing the speed of mining. You can try out some altcoins, but during these days, even alts need some hi-fi technology like GPU to mine them too. You can see the best option of getting mining power on rent in order to mine your desired coins.

Is it still possible to mine for bitcoins using a normal desktop computer nowadays?
For now I don't think it still possible to mining bitcoin using desktop computer as the processing capacity is very minimal. But you can still mining altcoins. I wish that is possible I could have used my computer for it. Though buying tools that you can use to mining bitcoin is a worthwhile investment if you have the capital.

You can use your normal computer mine bitcoins, I did use GUIminer to mine in my computer, it is working and it is great. But the problem about this is it's profit, don't expect to have a lot of profit from these type of mining because it is not really profitable.

You can use your normal computer mine bitcoins, I did use GUIminer to mine in my computer, it is working and it is great. But the problem about this is it's profit, don't expect to have a lot of profit from these type of mining because it is not really profitable.

theoretically, you could mine bitcoin blocks using pen and paper... But personally, at current day and age, i would never say that you can use a cpu to mine bitcoins to a newbie.
Saying that you succesfully mined bitcoins using GUIminer might lead new users to the conclusion that this is something they could do.

If you re-read my first post in this topic: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1783157.msg17790187#msg17790187 you can see that if you a server with XEON dual core CPU's AND 6 GPU's, you'll make $11/year BEFORE having to pay your power company and BEFORE having to pay for hardware/repairs.

I did the calculations for an i7 (wich is currently found in high-end desktop pc's):
http://www.coinwarz.com/calculators/bitcoin-mining-calculator/?h=0.02&p=130&pc=0.00&pf=1.00&d=422170566883.83700000&r=12.50000000&er=1042.04050000&hc=0.00
The earnings per year are so small coinwarz doesn't even register them, so less than 0.5 cent/year (that's < $0.005/year), but you'd be burning +130Watt 24/7 to make less than this half a dollarcent a year... So imagine your face when you receive the powerbill for mining this 0.5 cent/year...

At current diff, it would, on average, take you 1049310635 days to mine a block with an i7 CPU mining at 100% 24/7, that's about 3 million years. Since the diff is rising, the time to mine a single block will even be a lot longer in reality.

Mining with your CPU in 99.99999999999999999% of the cases will result in negative profit, even with free power! The chance of hitting a block with a cpu is smaller than the chance of winning the lottery, but the earnings from a lottery win are much higher, and the ticket price is lower.

So, altough it's THEORETICALLY possible to mine bitcoins with a CPU, please don't make these statements because they'll confuse new members.

Possible, yeah, but not ideal. I am not a master on the topic, but I think mining requires a powerful computer which works 24/7. The cost of the equipment + electricity cost is greater than the one you'd be mining using a regular desktop.

(I once asked if I could mine using a laptop - no. Not ideal. Mining will burn the laptop + it will cost electricity)

Burn ? Why would anything burn ? It should all be well ventilated and at correct no information temperatures. Noobs are not going to over clock anything. If the so then maybe they will burn something yes.

Some altcoins can still be worth mining for. Depends if you get in early or not and if it is asic resistant.

i think i don't want to risk my personal computer to just doing mining bitcoin, my reason is bitcoin difficulty is high and its need medium until high hardware although our spec of personal computer is high, i think our chance to gain much of bitcoin is small. if you have more money then i will suggest you to buy the hardware and you can start mining but i don't suggest to mining bitcoin because of difficulty is increase so high and its better to mining altcoin.

bitcoin mining business are now unprofitable. we do mining on a large scale if it still does not want to lose.

Mining also a profitable business if you look into start as small scale business. Sure you will be looser. Most of the miners started using solar miners due to electricity cost issue. Therefore, if op would like to use simple desktop to mine the coins means it would not work at all in the earning part. If still he wish to do miner, he could buy some old antminer and start mining.
