HD5850 went pop

Grabbed two new HD5850s on Monday - today one of them has started artifacting in games. Have toned down the clock speed, and no change - what's the chance that it was a poorly made card?

Had previously been running both cards at 880mhz core, 900mhz memory with temps sitting at 65C at full load (fan on 75%). Nothing really out of the ordinary. Is it just a case of inferior silicone?

I'd file an RMA on it. If it's doing that under normal conditions within a week of purchase, I'd hate to see what it'll do down the road. I had a GeForce 8600 do that about 6 months in, and it died completely one month later. The only good part was that EVGA had a 3 year warranty on it, and when I RMAed it, they no longer sold 8600s. They sent me a 9600 GSO, which was 1.5x faster than the 8600. Maybe you'll get lucky here.

Yeah already sorting out the RMA, was just wondering if there was a chance that the other card could do the same - but I suppose the bigger issue is the first one dying after 2 days...

If only RMA here was fast - the card will probably be gone for 2-4 weeks.

It's probably just a dodgy card.

I'd RMA it, and maybe get some more airflow going over the replacement

I've currently got 3 x 5850s in one case, and the middle one runs at around 85 degrees at 900mhz core / 300mhz memory with the help of a desk fan!

Hopefully your RMA will get fulfilled. I have had problems returning GCards in the past where they "test" them and determine nothing was wrong! I'm not sure of the stock speeds of the 5850 but I presume you have been running them with a slight overclock? If so you may have an even harder time as they will only test at default clocks.

Saying that you would hope for a slight overclock on most graphics cards nowadays, I've got 3 5830s that show perfectly the variance in batches. One runs 890/300, one runs 975/300 and the best one runs 1050/300 all on stock volts! All run under 60c in an open case!
