I remember one time around 20-ish years ago, I had changed my number about a year earlier, so I decided to call my old number to see if anyone answered.  I was not expecting anyone to answer, so when someone did answer, I was a little caught off guard, and so I said: "Is JJG there?" and the caller said:  "This is he."  He responded just like I would have responded, and he sounded just like me.  I can't remember what I said after that.  I probably just got scared (and freaked out), and I just hung up the phone without saying anything further.

This is so wicked..remember the "Frequency" (2000 release) movie?
If it was 20-ish years ago...maybe you just watched the movie and got spooked because of this?

One day, maybe about 15-16 years ago, after I read "Moon is a harsh mistress" for the first time, I got a call that had NO number ID...and, because of what I just read, i asked..."Are you an AI"? ...or maybe I said "computer"?
Mind you, this was many years prior to the current AI crop and the massive volume of scam calls ...I only asked about it because of that book in which AI called the protagonist to establish machine-human intelligence contact.
The voice said: "Why do you think this is the case"?
I mumbled something inconclusive, but the voice did not lead in any interesting direction, so I disconnected.

Well, my son once was trying to call an old friend he hasn't called in a while, and a totally different dude was answering, in some foreign language. Later he walked up at the house of his friend's parents and asked him about that call, and he said the number he got from him was from a service provider, but the contract was cancelled years ago.
My suggestion was that the providers, in the face of limited amounts of phone numbers, just reuse numbers from cancelled contracts after a while.

But JJG's story really sounds like from a horror movie scene  Cool

--------------------------------

Here i am sitting,
running out of ideas*
But wait a little

Lyrical magic
always saved me from this state
to write a haiku

Is there something?
Something that's got to be said?
It got to be said

Something about corn
Yeah, that would be the best now
But what should it be?

Thinking about phones
using SIM cards nowadays
No more dial plates

Now i got it, y'all:
It's R-SIM IN UNIVERSE
For true observers.

--------------------------------
#haiku

*Originally i started out with "I'm out of ideas" but i wasn't sure if "ideas" are two or three syllables, so i changed the haiku a bit, finally assuming it's three syllables.

R-SIM IN UNIVERSE is actually an anagram i created from my mind, i had to write down the letters in sorted order, though.
Who can decipher it, WITHOUT USING AI, gets all my remaining sMerits (currently 1 at the time of writing) after i have read the first correct answer (could be tomorrow, though).

EDIT: Sorry, answers from two people (on my ignore list) will probably go unnoticed.

- [Trump Media BTC Sales]: Trump Media & Technology Group sold another 2,628 BTC worth about $165 million, adding to supply pressure, while its remaining 4,260.73 BTC is pledged as collateral until May 2028, a structural overhang that could weigh on sentiment.

Self-Custody is a right. Say no to "non-custodial"

Researchers have developed an AI framework to identify Bitcoin transactions suspected of money laundering and other illegal activities. The system achieves an 89.4% accuracy rate.

If you are doing anything illegal, it appears you'll be easily found and dealt with.

Of course, within the powers that be, and certain dweebs promoting paper bitcoin without understanding what brings value to bitcoin, there is a desire to make it seem as if anyone who engages in self-custody and/or transacts with his bitcoin directly with another person or a business is or has been engaging in illegal activities, and if they had not engaged in illegal activities within one or two transactions back then surely if we go back several hops, then surely there were illegal activities in there somewhere, right?

But JJG's story really sounds like from a horror movie scene  Cool

The story seems better (and more scary) if OOM calls OOM's old number and OOM answers from the old number rather than OOM calls OOM's old number and JJG answers from OOM's old number.

That second variation of the story would not be scary, since how would you know that it was JJG?  You ask for OOM, and then JJG says that OOM is not there, but instead JJG is here.  Why would that be scary, except that you happen to ONLY know JJG as some discombobulated interwebs presence.

If it was 20-ish years ago...maybe you just watched the movie and got spooked because of this?
EDIT: upon re-reading your response, it is almost exactly like "Frequency", albeit the protagonist in that movie talks to his dad 20-25 years earlier.

One day, maybe about 15-16 years ago, after I read "Moon is a harsh mistress" for the first time, I got a call that had NO number ID...and, because of what I just read, i asked..."Are you an AI"? ...or maybe I said "computer"?

First of all, JJG, you can't leave us hanging in the middle of the mystery like that. 😄

Who was on the other end of the line? Did you accidentally connect to another dimension?

I think we all have stories like these. One day we should start a thread just to share those weird memories.

I remember something similar around late 2006. I received a call on my old Nokia 8310, but instead of a phone number it simply displayed: NO NUMBER.

I answered, and the caller asked, "Are you MY FULL NAME?"

I said, "Yes."

Then he asked, "You are living in MY AREA?"

By that point I was already getting nervous, so I asked, "Who's this?"

He calmly replied, "Your friend."

...and immediately hung up.

I was so freaked out that I switched my phone off and didn't turn it back on for quite a while. 😂

Years later I learned that calls from certain security agencies or sometimes telecom operators could make their caller id appear as NO NUMBER. So it was probably just some sort of "security" verification call.

...which, thankfully, I seem to have passed. 😄

Alright, just had a lengthy (phone)call from the past and need some time to process it.
And then i will need some time to process that phone story and ongoing discussion before i will reply.

Truly, somehow it's unimaginable for me how a human life could not be complicated (more in the meaning of complex).
That said,

I remember my childhood phone #.  But don't know any of my immediate familys now. lol.
when i was a kid we only needed to dial the last 5 digits if we called local, guess life was simpler back then lol
Same here.
And if you were short on change, you could "morse" in the number quickly using the switchhook, which made it possible to call for free from public phone booths.
Transformation to digital phone networks ruined that too  Angry
Once i saw a YT clip where a couple of today's teenagers were confronted with an analog telephone (with the old dial plate) and asked what they thought this device is for and how it works.

Similar, but slightly less funny:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZSZB0z-Nt0

From that demonstration, I conclude that rotary dial is not intuitive, even though rotary dial has not been out of the mainstream scene for very long.

Nah, just kids these days are fucking stupid
