From that demonstration, I conclude that rotary dial is not intuitive, even though rotary dial has not been out of the mainstream scene for very long.   

I have likely not used a rotary dial in over a quarter of a century. Or to put it another way, the last millennium.

Though I think they still work with POTS and I assume the telcos still charge for dialtone service.

My demented bro-in-law has a working one in his home. I used it last year when testing his new telecalm phone service which screens incoming phones.

I tried by looking at it, but couldn't get anywhere. Then I did what OOM mentioned: I sorted the letters in ascending order first. This strips away the structure and leaves the brain open to all possibilities. I tried each letter, and when I reached V, I tried VIRUS IN NUMBERS, but I was missing a U and a B. And then it clicked! VIRES IN NUMERIS!

A tidbit that might amuse you guys is I got a 56k modem back in the day that wasn't functional and I used it for a year making the carrier signal initialization sounds by voice.

Once it was initiated the handshake worked just fine.

I never did figure out what was wrong with that modem.

To make matters worse, the store where I bought the computer sellers had a sense of humor, so they set the modem to turn on the computer every time the house phone rang - and it rang very often because there were no cell phones yet. It took me a while to figure it out, but in the end it turned out that I don't have a ghost that likes to play Tetris on the computer

I remember I once had a US Robotics modem. Plastic case, creamy-white in color. I think it was 9.6 kbps. Used it at home to visit BBS "sites". Also for FTP transfers. My parents were mad at me for occupying the line for hours. Commodore Amiga, early 90s.

Hah, reminds me of this chick back in the day that called me because her new computer kept coming on at night and waking her up.

I told her to look in the bios and she was like i can't do that.

I tried to talk her through it and finally gave up when she refused to try and told her to call the people she bought it from.

She said she could not get through to them so I charged her to drive over her house and change a bios setting that took 30 seconds.

Some people amaze me, all she had to do was listen to me and try and would have had free tech support.

Billions of dollars, this cant be a small group of individuals.  If they stole juat a few millions they would have more chance of not getting caught.
