The wealthy have access to dark pools for trading, and off-market sales. Not on any of the usual exchanges.

But before they do that, they would probably buy a few hundred or thousands on the exchanges first.

They could use extra $$$ to short the market and create dips in order to get a better off-market auction price.

Wouldn't you?

There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, but full nodes are more resource-heavy, and they must do a lengthy initial syncing process. As a result, lightweight clients with somewhat less security are commonly used.

never really seen bitcoin just hover below a previous ATH before. what's the deal?

The phenomenon has been going on pretty much throughout the whole of 2017, that is what makes it so very amazing.. ongoing and consistent upwards pressures that have not really gotten so overheated as to lose support.  In other words, the rise in price has not been so outrageous as to lose support.

As some might say, slow and steady.... blah blah blah. go bitcoin go...  Wink

So let's assume a crazy theory for a second. Let's assume that there's mega fear of economic uncertainty on the horizon, and some very wealthy entities *DO* actually see Bitcoin as a safe haven much like precious metals.

Well then, that much money coming into this market (without distorting the price discovery completely) would be like trying to push an elephant through a key hole. They can't shove that much money into bitcoin all at once, because all the available coins (either OTC or on exchanges) would dry up instantly and price would go parabolic overnight.

So they have to do small pumps in, short the market, wait for more coins to be made available, gobble them up again, pump and short again, repeat the pattern, etc. They would have to continue that process for a long while, but they have to get it done before SHTF.

And SHTF could come as early as later this year, or could be as long off as sometime middle or end of next year.
See Wyckoff's Composite Man theory.

Good morning Bitcoinland.

Still consolidating/coiling sideways... currently $2705USD (Bitcoinaverage).

As hard as I try not to talk about altcoins here, I just have to chuckle. Oh poor Vitalik. Boo hoo.

As some might say, slow and steady.... blah blah blah. go bitcoin go...  Wink

I can agree with that.  Grin

Look Dave, I can see you're really upset about this. I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill, and think things over.

I don't own any ether either.  Smiley

I heard Vitalik speak at Decentral in Toronto the day before he launched Ethereum and while the concept of smart contracts and his mining algorithms fascinated me, I found the concept of pre-mined coins to be sleazy, so I took a pass.

With Bitcoin I feel I'm doing something good for the world.

The whole ICO thing is just the evil spawn of Ethereum. Suckers beware.

OK, I'll shut up about altcoins now.

I am in the same boat. No coin cap and/or software defined rules on it -> not interested. So I passed on ETH but I am happy that I can use it now for specific purposes (AKA, if investors want to jump into ICOs creating tech for the future, I have no concerns. There will be some big wins but also BIG LOSSES).

Bitcoin is simple and pure

In the end, it's all about money. The alts are not evil in and of themselves. If you don't understand something, it's good to stay away from it. Have no regrets. But if you can see an opportunity without directly harming anyone else, why not? Even bitcoin will have its losers (the ones buying high; but if they just use it to do value transfers, like buying something, they don't really lose) but that's the way it goes, all of this is voluntary.

The only reason I own ETH is I'm spreading my stuff across a bunch of alts. In the end, they all go back to bitcoin. (And the other alts have their uses too.) I got some precious metals too, because ... because!

We are comparing a method of knowledge (science) to a system of belief (faith), which is not known for revising itself based on new evidence.  Even when it does, the “wrongs” are blamed on human interpretation.  Science is all about improving ideas to get closer to the truth, and, in some cases, completely throwing out theories that have been proven wrong.  Furthermore, the claims of religion are virtually all unfalsifiable, thus cannot be proven wrong.  Therefore, comparing religion and science on the basis of falsifiability is a faulty comparison.

Bitcoin isn't a science any more than a Quartz clock is a science. They both apply it, but they are not it. Also, we are not looking at these brands of technologies in and of themselves, but at their dissemination and market value, which very much involves belief, just as it did with preceding forms of money.
