So I guess the markets will be more concerned about the progress of cryptocurrency use in real life than the hype of the markets. A useful but dull period (and it will take some time to pick up the real bargains in altcoins).

So long, Bitcoin. We will meet again in a few months  Grin

With this massive pop, big investors have probably scared many weak hands.

Too many fud, media news and so on about BTC.

Everyone knows a bit about this stuff and it's not good for institutions.

In the mean time... bankers want their piece of cake in this game... just hodl and wait this psychological crash ending its course.

Newb here.  Is Bitfinex buying coins?  I've watched hundreds of bitcoins sold at $8200 with only 2-10 available.  What's up with that?

Margin calls aren't shown on some charts sites...

edit/add https://twitter.com/MacroScope17/status/960271877628485632 thread posits exactly what you're saying

I'd guess it's both.

First off, it is not good thinking to assume malevolence before considering various plausible and reasonable non-malevolent explanations.

Second:  There are a few reasonable explanations why you might see many fewer coins on the order book than are being sold at around any specific price including: 1) Many exchanges allow for invisible orders, and Bitfinex is one of them, 2) some buyers will continue to put orders on the books, as they get sold into (and they don’t necessarily want to put a large buy order at one particular price and get all their orders sold into at once (then they would potentially run out of money if the price were to go lower) 3) of course, market orders do not show up on the books, and they can  be ongoingly propping the price at a particular price-point 4) and perhaps margin calls as last of the v8s mentioned.

@CryptoMink
The SEC & CFTC (two major financial regulatory authorities) are set to testify on cryptocurrencies during a U.S. Senate hearing on Tuesday, Feb 6. I bet most (if not all) institutional investors have pulled out of crypto markets ahead of this hearing for risk management purposes.

It was before that, they entered October 30th 2017, when futures got announced. They pumped the price, seduced the sheeple, and now we are going to $2500, if not to $1000...

These people are evil... they're gonna do to bitcoin what they did to gold and silver before. And the sheeple are going to fall for their tricks, as always.

Ask side is thin so we are back above 9000 in no time if just a few start to buy.

Unfortunately, the amount of support and resistance on the books seem to be a reverse indicator. I am keeping my fingers crossed that we do see 9000 soon though.

It is much easier for wall street to have a big score in stocks, bonds than in bitcoin.
if there was some money to be made by shorting, then 67% of maximum gains for shorts are already made.

From my perspective, bitcoin is an unencumbered asset (it has no debt or any other liability).
I simply consider it as a perpetual call option on the network. If you bought higher, then you are out of the money (currently), but since holding period is unlimited, what's the worry?

Just don't use cash that you would need in the foreseeable future to buy btc and you are, potentially, golden (at some point).

So for the first time, tax planning needs to be taken into consideration in my trading strategy.  It makes things much more complicated but it is a nice problem to have.
