Unlike traditional banking where clients have only a few account numbers, with Bitcoin people can create an unlimited number of accounts (addresses). This can be used to easily track payments, and it improves anonymity.

Goldman sachs backed Circle just bought Poloniex
what does this mean for bitcoin ?

How much have they paid for it?

"On Monday Circle will announce, as Fortune can confirm for the first time, that it has bought Poloniex, one of the world’s most active cryptocurrency exchanges. A person familiar with the terms of the deal who was not authorized to speak about it tells Fortune that the price tag comes in around $400 million."

http://fortune.com/2018/02/26/circle-cryptocurrency-trade-bitcoin/

Then I think it is somewhat bullish... but not terribly bullish as it had been the case if they would have paid over 1Billion.

Also I assume that price tag doesn't include any "crypto assets" they would have accumulated over time and only the "core business".

With PoW, CPU mining would be the best. Access to CPU processing power is most widespread and CPUs can be utilized to a lot more tasks then just so solve one task. This would be A LOT more energy efficient and less costly to the users of the network.

Nonsense. Regardless of technology, the energy consumption of Bitcoin mining will tend up to the amount where the money spent upon it will be ever so slightly less than the dollar value of the bitcoins mined. Basic econ 101.

But because the bitcoin community is mostly one big echo chamber, this hasn't been exactly discussed.

Nonsense again. It has been discussed over and over and over and...

Can somebody spread the news, that every time someone sells a bitcoin, a sweet little puppy will die, until we are above 15k?

I blame China.

Chinese do eat dog.  Embarrassed

But last dump was on US.

Downward trend breaks now at 10600!

You know you are replying to a confessed non bitcoin holder troll account, don't you?

It is perfectly legit to have "conflicts of interest", more so when he has already clearly (and honestly) stated it, but a good amount of biasing is obviously expected.

OTH it is somewhat ironic you talk about destroying Bitcoin (which I do fully agree with you in this case about an unjustified and UNCONSENSUATED PoW change) considering your support to BCH.

I recently started mining with 24tb HDDs and 1 gtx1070. The profits are too low but I don't care much. I'll extend my GPU rig up to 6 cards and then I'll stop.

If you are able to mine, you should mine. But never go all in on one thing. I am holding FIAT, crypto, mining equipment and gold. That's what I do.

Best of luck. Sincerely. Good to see someone actually stepping up to compete, rather than whine about how rigged the game is.

People who can't compete always want to change the rules of the game.
Especially if the game is about keeping open competition.

I don't care if there is only one shovel maker. Good for them for being successful at what they do.
I do care, if they can charge whatever they want for their shovels, to the point of suppressing shoveling when they don't want it to happen.

Monopoly is never good, except for the monopolist. Don't jbreher yourself into a corner.

Oh come on. The only sustainable monopoly is one where the government has rigged the game to the advantage of the monopolist. In a natural monopoly, the raising of prices just results in the ability of new entrants to profit.

A bright early good morning Bitcoinland.

The battle for 5 digits continues... currently $10328USD/$13102CAD (Bitcoinaverage).

Maybe one of these times it'll stick. 4 digits is so 2017. It's time to move on.
_____

Meanwhile on the wall observation front, there's been some fancy dancing of multiple 200 coin bids at Stamp. Phony or real?

Hopefully they'll keep the price moving upward. Unfortunately I need to acquire some dollars today. I always hate selling Bitcoin, especially when the price is this low, but at least it's back up over $10k and I'll only be selling less than half a coin.

I suppose I could rationalize it by trying to justifying it as "profit-taking" but I'd rather have my profits in Bitcoin. Selling always makes me feel like a failure.

EU hearing press release is largely very positive and balanced, only this piece they will need to explain to me : "wallet providers should be subject to the Anti-Money Laundering Directive."

Are they not aware that you can just build your software from code?  Will anybody that ever coded a feature for wallet software need to do AML for the entire world population?  Square peg, meet round hole...
