Most crypto holders will file as late as possible since they are writing big checks.  I will send my check TUESDAY.

Can you do that? Reuters says the deadline is Tuesday 17th, but I thought that means they have to receive your payment by Tuesday.

I think this news is premature.  Most crypto holders will file as late as possible since they are writing big checks.  I will send my check TUESDAY.  After then we can begin to see who is reporting.  Also this does not consider extensions.

That said I'll not be surprised if we see underreporting.  But numbers we see now are too early.

I kind of agree, but I still think lots aren't reporting at all.  I called my accountant ahead of time and he said that unless they send out official 1099s from an exchange he wouldn't worry about it (as if it were a joke to file).  I then explained that I did receive a 1099 (from one exchange) and had a compiled a 319 page 8949 using API software and bottom line figures  (which had a few missing cost basis items from a DEX and a wallet but whatever, I may have overpaid a couple of hundred dollars.  The perception is, right or wrong, that people will continue getting away with it.  I'm more afraid of getting future audits years from now over getting caught now that I feel like because of the things I've read online, his reaction, and the sheer amount of effort it takes to even create these forms.. that most people won't know it is required, refuse to do it, or won't know how to with no one to approach including most accountants.  The timing though does line up with your statement though because I just today wrote a check for the amount of taxes I owed.. and even though I think the number of people who waited til today or Tuesday is in the minority..  I am one of them so my logic may be flawed.

I decided to pay top line income tax, but only on realised gains - if they decide to tax non-realised profits - I don't have a clue how much I'd have to pay, hope that's okay - the rules on how to pay tax are really sketchy

Again, I could be way out of line here, but look at this for a minute. And this is the cream of the crop. There are 'conferences' all over the place, doing 'talks'
Really? Is this Bitcoin now? 'FinTech'. Give me one good reason.
It's not amazing.

No it's not amazing. Just a bunch of young people doing a mindshare grab for "Blockchain expert" just to find a high paying job somewhere. I only count about 2 people in that roster that I would consider actual experts.

But hey it could be worse. Just wait, in 5-10 years when you see a speaker lineup like that and it's all 40-50 yr old men and women in suits with the "Executive such and such" title, you'll know the crypto/blockchain industry has been completely taken over and compromised by the FinTech nimwit snake oil salespeople.
This is always how it goes. Visionaries and geniuses Build Stuff, and then They come in and take it over.

Years ago I saw my first pink laptop in the local shop. That's when I knew the age of technology doubling in power and effectiveness every few years was at an end. And sure enough.

The first thing I do with any new laptop is remove anything mcafee.

The first thing I do with any new laptop is replace the HDD with an SSD (or add an M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD) and do a clean install of Win7.

Yes, McAfee is malware (John M sold the company decades ago and said he'd never install it on any of his own machines) but it's small potatoes compared to Win8 or Win10.

When the operating system itself is PRISM-based malware, bloatware is the least of your worries. Be very careful what OS updates you allow.

"Tatiana Moroz: is an American folk singer-songwriter, liberty activist, and peaceful revolutionary, Tatiana Moroz is pioneering creative autonomy and freedom as the creator of the world’s first artist cryptocurrency Tatiana Coin. Tatiana merges music with modern technology to encourage social awareness. She helps renew the power of songwriters to unite our communities. Her inspiring 3rd album “Keep The Faith” was released in 2017."

I remember when social awareness was just called education. Or being educated.

But I guess it's not PC to say someone is educated because there are soooo many stupid people out there that at most they can be aware of things.

My social awareness duty for the day: there is breast cancer out there. There, now you are aware. #breastcancerawareness

There was an Ebola Coin once. Not exactly sure where the proceeds went, but it raised social awareness about the Ebola. Probably.

yes Rose... it's exactly that... a little of batman darkknight and a lot of historical evidence... enslavement, not sharing, manipulating etc, classic enemy of the free market.

Like to like transactions are a taxable event in the US.. if you trade Bitcoin to Ethereum even, that event is the same as cashing out and is a taxable event.  How to do it is very annoying, you'd either have to record every trade throughout the year on a spreadsheet that tracked the value in USD of both coins at the time of the event or you'd have to use API linked software like bitcoin.tax and pay for it.  It has options in the software to remove like-kind trades if you think you can get away with it, but I think your argument here woulnd't stand up very well with being audited.. the problem with being audited is you'll assume no cost basis.. so you'll be taxed as if you had no buy in price, which can really hurt you if you have a large portfolio, along with some sort of penalty up front for not filing.  I'd say the risk of audit this year whether you file or not file is pretty low (unless coinbase sent you a 1099k) but as the years go on it'll become more and more likely.  I'd rather just pay and be able to sleep at night, but having to pay extra money to end up paying more to file to pay more on taxes is kind of a lame scenario.. but it is what it is.

This is always how it goes. Visionaries and geniuses Build Stuff, and then They come in and take it over.

Years ago I saw my first pink laptop in the local shop. That's when I knew the age of technology doubling in power and effectiveness every few years was at an end. And sure enough.

I was clued in that Tech was peaking when the iPhone didn't change at all after several generations, and my five old laptop doesn't do anything less than a current one.

Now they've moved on to useless things like smart watches, wireless doorbells, and in-home spy pods.

And don't even get me starting on the IoT, "Internet of Things". God what snake oil marketing. /facepalm

hey roach, I read your earlier post.

There are two kind of communist jews.

the funny one, they aren't authoritarian and build their keebootz, and force no one to go there. very cool !

then there are the "bolshevicks" who are in reality so called "free masson"... key word aren't jew or communist. but agents of pharao, those who betrayed Moses.

thank you, I am sure YOU can comment, and maybe understood, feel free to PM, if I miss it.

At least IBM seems fairly confident in quantum computing hitting the mainstream industry within 5ish years. So we're not too far off from actually interesting new tech developments.

Still excited, but impatient as hell. Need a fast forward button for life (one that doesn't drain your life span).

I don't mean to offend (although this likely will), but I see you've drank the Koolaid. You will be disappointed. IBM is the #1 Repeat Offender.

One days years from now, you'll look back and see the continuous Tech cycle pattern for what it actually is: all hype and bullshit designed and marketed to get people to spend money, and to create tech jobs and departments out of thin air, always building future solutions looking for a problem that doesn't exist. Hardly any of it really improves human life to any real degree.

Near as we can tell, if you avoid a (rather long) list of suspicious KBs, Win7 lacks the "telemetry" spy features of later products.

Why is Win7 safer than Win8?

I'm not a Microsoft engineer so I can't answer that but I do know I have fewer problems and privacy/anonymity issues with Win7.

Don't you find it strange that after waging all-out war against "piracy" in previous Windows versions, including product activation and disguising authenticity checkers as "important updates", Microsoft not only started giving their flagship product away for free, they practically shoved it down people's throats?

Not only that, but now it seems any new Win10 system comes bundled with their number 2 product, MS Office, waiting to be activated by (guess what?!) logging into an account at Microsoft.

Where do you think the replacement revenues are coming from?

When the day comes that I can't use Win7 (the tried-and-true TheThingy Win7 installer won't work with EUFI for example, only with legacy BIOS) I'll have no choice but to switch to Linux. You can't trust any American company. They're all under the thumb of Uncle Sam.

exactly ! why do you think gates was forced out? not by the cia/nsa... that what the pharaonists want us to believe. Look who is the head of $msft? an indian... do indians have class system very close to the pharao? that nothing is yours, that all belongs to the uper class? yes.... so why aren't you downloading NOW a free open source OS Huh

don't be a noob.

Having an open source crypto on a closed OS is proof of not knowing what you do.

Oh boy I sure have noticed that. I need to get my head examined for still using Win10. But I do find it easier to use than Linux, even though I love Linux and have it running on a few machines.

When I first set up my Win10 laptop, I set up a OneDrive account like MS likes for you to do. Then about a year later, even though I never use it I manually changed my OneDrive credentials. Then suddenly Win10 REALLY started to complain, calling it a 'Microsoft Account Problem' that needs immediate attention. I now get nag notifications daily that Win10 is out of sync with my OneDrive account and they REALLY REALLY want me to re-sync. Now why would that be? Why would they care so much?  Wink

I don't think a person that could successfully offend me exists, so no worries about that.

But alas, while there's a lot of empty hype on the tech (and every other) front it's patently false to classify it as just hype and bullshit. We literally went from being fucking monkeys in pretty houses to having everything that we have today in just about one generation. If you showed even 0,01% of what we have today to people from 100 years ago they'd burn you at the stake for witchcraft, and people from roughly one generation ago would put you in an asylum for making any such claims.

And progress does without a doubt accelerate as everything new can be combined with everything old to create new things, of which some will be further new things that can be mixed and matched with other innovations.

Hence, a snowballing process is not just simply observable, but objectively undeniable.

Thus I predict that you will be the one looking back to this day, years from now, no longer recognizing the world that you live in.

You're right I won't. Because if the Tech industry has its way, all human workers will be replaced by AI and androids. And we'll all be broke and homeless, can't afford healthcare, and trying to work the measly 'gig economy' jobs that are left.

Warren Buffet (I think) said that robots, should be taxed at a level of the replacement of human workers..otherwise people will be paying services and any productive gains

to society (taxes/etc) will not keep up.....something like that....may have a point...I can't see a lot of 25 to 65 blue collar workers ALL sitting around 'passively' as their

'legitimate' high paying skilled jobs get outsourced to 'robots'....there will be 'social consequences' big time...if it is not addressed correctly (what correctly is, I've no clue)
