I have a couple of Ledger Nano S, but don't fully utilize them. By default, it looks like Chrome extensions are the preferred interface, I don't trust that. Electrum on Linux supports it, I trust that more. I keep multiple paper wallets, one per year. If I get to the point of cashing out much, it's helpful to be able to have a hard date on the blockchain of when I owned it. I'm not sure how to incorporate that into Ledger. I know about the optional hidden space.

Opendime hardware looks cool, but it's more of a one-shot thing. Good for basic transfers off-chain. You can't easily back it up, and it may not accept going through the washing machine well.

Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

Hardware wallets terrify me for some reason. Not 100% sold on them yet, being an old crotchety Bitcoin "Core" user from day one. I feel more in control of my encrypted wallet.dat / IT OpSec / interfacing with something I have the option of building from source.

I'm concerned about being locked into a hardware wallet's ecosystem... I really need to look into them more.

Except you just don't do that from a 'hot machine' connected to the Internet. Ever.

Call me old fashioned but I don't like the hardware wallets either. It is still a device with your private keys directly connected to the Internet, multiple issues have been found and patched on the Trezor/Ledger and co.
Therefore (I just) use an old crappy laptop to sign the transaction:

- Rip the wifi/bluetooth/hdd out and boot from USB (using Tails & Electrum/Bitcoin Core for example).
- Create the transaction in your 'online watch only wallet', and cold sign the transaction on the offline laptop. Done.

Bob, please..

I got the Trezor here, learned all about it, played with it, there it sits.

Why touch the paper wallet if you don't have to?

The point in HW is that you never write your words on computer, instead you chose them with the buttons on the HW. They are not accessible in the device neither by you nor by internet in any way. While any solution on computer involves writing the words on computer, which compromises the security. There are plenty keyloggers and troyans that search everything you type and you don't have a way to protect yourself.

I think splitting your coins up amongst various devices, wallets, hardware is the best option. Splitting your risk minimises your chances of ending up like one of those moron’s starting ‘I lost all my coins’ threads on here.

Most people who have been involved in bitcoin for a long time know how to secure their coins though.

Friday at last...for all you working schleps out here. Quit looking at the corns price and get back at it.

Looks like a good time to buy the dip once this retrace completes. Plenty of strong support at this random .5 fib. I think we could possibly test the .618 level as well. I feel this is just gathering up liquidity and think we are still going over $10k in the near future but please do your own research.

This is just for comedic effect..ok?  DONT PANIC. That being said..it is a possibility but data indicates more upward than downward pressure at this time.
Have to move on from Barts to Thanos formations it looks like.

Some of the points and discussion's over the last several pages are good if opinionated. Just remember without scientific principles bitcoin would not exist. In other words..if you cant believe in math..why are you even here?
Oh..and another smh moment.. The flat earthers believe there is a pac-man effect when walking off the "edge". Haven't heard a good theory for eclipses from them yet..

I don’t like moving my coins, last time I did was to move them to claim BCH, couldn’t miss out on that windfall. That was back in November I think, I did claim BTG & Bitcore too.

People have been mentioning other forks recently, I’m trying to figure out is it worth doing it all over again. The prices of these shitcoin’s vary from exchange to exchange so I don’t even know potentially how much I’m missing out on by not moving my bitcoin’s AGAIN & claiming them.

Does anybody know for example if person X had _ _ _ bitcoin’s back in November/December how much money they’re missing out on by not claiming various shitcoin’s forked since then?

We have been below replacement rate since the 80s in the west. We are literally dying.

If you believe the data/outcome of the Calhoun's rats experiment can also apply to humans, then the reason for the dropping reproduction rate starts to make sense.

But it's more than just available space, or the amount comfortable space, that one lives in. The rats didn't have to "purchase" their real estate, they just laid claim to it. However, humans do. Also the rats didn't have to "work" for any resources. Humans do.

Too many offspring are not just a drain on their parents comfort of life level, but also their available resources/wealth. Thus too many offspring now pose a risk to the parent's longevity through a chance at comfortable retirement.

Notice how the wealthy elite still seem happy and healthy while having a boat load of children? Yeah there's a reason for that.

"Don't have more children than you can afford (either while married or through divorce)" is now becoming a major thing. And in the West it'll only get worse when people are more overworked and underpaid, taxes and inflation continue to increase, income levels peak, debt levels peak, and large, comfortable homes become astronomically unaffordable for most couples. Actually we are already there.
The fact that the rats didn't have to do any "work" for their food and lodgings most likely made it worse. They lived under True Communism, which means their amygdala was even more atrophied than ours is in the current culture.

The fact that Trump won indicates that we are not entirely gone yet, but nonetheless, the cultural cycle marches on. There will be no improvement without a lot of dead lefties, including and especially among the leadership. Whether that happens before or after a catastrophic collapse remains to be seen.

I would say the same. I dont trust any portable wallet, be it a hardware wallet or a cellphone wallet. I cant say exactly why, I just dont feel safe if I dont have full control, like in a desktop. Maybe its the size of the screen, or the lack of a mouse, or the lack of a copy of the blockchain, I dont know.

Do yourself a favor and get a Ledger or Trezor.
Or Digital Bitbox or Keepkey
Bitbox has 2nd dummy wallet with secondary login and passcode and looks just like any usb stick so can be used anywhere without anyone noticing
Keepkey has biggest screen and stylish

Hm well there is always remote signing on an air gaped computer. I don't think intel's security flaws could compromise that method of doing things in any way. Not without a stuxnet level of sophistication attack. Maybe theoretically possible but not even close to practically possible. https://bitcoin.org/en/wallets/desktop/windows/armory/

It's shit like this that keeps me up at night.

Cold sweats and all.

How the fuck can I ever know my Bitcorns are truly secure running on Intel ?

I get nervous every time I need to type in my decryption key to send a payment.

Terrifying.
Spread it around. I got 3 HW wallets, a phone, Kraken and a couple regular computer wallets. One gets hacked, you know where the weak link is for the future and you can still eat.

To each their own. I trust the Trezor, esp b/c its firmware is open source, and you are not locked in to it. But you guys have to realize that if the majority think that way, then there won't be any widespread mass adoption?

Bitcoin has to be as easy and as secure as online banking on one's smartphone, or it will forever remain a niche for paranoid geeks.

A hardware wallet is a total waste of money in my opinion. Especially if you are a hodler.

And if you are a spender? Why not just use a cellphone?

You create your seed/priv key, you make some modifications on it so only you can unlock the balance, write down them on a paper, make multiple copies; or just memorize the damn thing.

Want to spend/use btc actively? Just install a ios/android wallet like greenwallet...

Anyway I know slush is making big money on those that's why they are being highly advertised.  I would just buy more bitcoins for that $100 and put them on a paper wallet for free..

I disagree. It's awesome and easy peasy to send small amounts of btc from my Trezor to my phone wallet to spend from there. Or just spend directly from the Trezor. All safe and secure.

Hodlers don't spend. There are only one kind of transactions in a hodlers wallet. It's always incoming. (Unless he moves his stash to a new address)

A cellphone is enough for anybody while you can just have another address for your daily uses on it.
