I'm playing my endgame, closing all my positions as gracefully as I can before I get too drunk. When I'm done, I expect 30-35% on my play money, which will all go into the freezer for the Jan 3 action. Nice end of year. Happy 2019 everybody.

Why do you think there will be some action on Jan 3rd?
The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

I just mean I'll get them off the exchange. Jan 3rd is "Not my keys, not my bitcoin" day, just that.

Bakkt confirmed today it will push back launch of its bitcoin futures from Jan 24 to "early 2019." Looks like the bear market will last longer. Hopefully they launch by 2020.

182.5 M$ not enough?
If those funds were already auditable, it would make some joyful noise for all crypto-enthusiasts.
At any rate, they accumulate - we should too.

Imagine what would have happened if you had done that at the beginning of 2018; you'd have probably gone completely bankrupt by now!

Okay guys, there seems to be some misunderstanding with respect to paper wallet security.  Now, the misunderstanding might lie with me or it might lie with you so I am putting some Bitcoin on the line here as a test.  If you are correct, it should be as easy as 123 to steal the .0123 Bitcoin I have secured on this paper wallet.  If I am correct, then I can relax.

My fully exposed paper wallet:

Go 4 IT!  I will monitor the balance.

Come on, xhomerx10, this is a passphrase-protected wallet! It is obviously very secure... But this is not what Bitcoin ATMs produce, and I know people who just keep those ATM-generated wallets in their safes. Not a wise thing to do! And not everyone knows it is possible to passphrase-protect a paper wallet.

It's a good point though, and a good source of info for the paper wallet fans out there. Do the above ^^^ or risk losing your BTC!

As an aside on a personal note, I created over 1,080 images this last year for your viewing pleasure. That is even with the 6 month sabbatical I enjoyed over the summer. I plan on starting fresh charts after new years but will break out the OR when appropriate.

Cheers

Thanks for your contributions buddy, and happy new year!

I've created approximately 600 shitposts this year, and have posted 24 ass pictures.

I've created over 500 posts that I thought were hilarious and not one person laughed! Cheesy

hey guy's

I know its getting old of me making something with all the HATS involved (i swear its the last one of 2018)
I really enjoyed myself being here, sometimes maybe a little too much but yeah can't help myself from time to time, IRL i'm a very social guy as well so ...... also not to bad I guess
being here has showed me that this thread is a real nice community and I just like spending time with those that wanna share and to teach others (guys like myself) somethings

so 2018 was a year of down and down and down again, but we all keep or minds on the longterm for BTC and will be keeping our minds on that ....

let 2019 be the start/preparation/tank fuelling of a nice BULLrun in some foreseeable futures

so GUY's wishing you all the best for the new year and beyond, be healthy, be happy, enjoy life, increase and appreciate BTC BTC BTC just don't be a slave of it, make sure to keep doing what you like to do etc

HAVE FUN THIS EVENING YOU WO's

think i got all the hats on it CHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERS

1. TREZOR: steal the device, then use the extraction method you refer to above to get the seed (and coins).
2. TREZOR: steal the device, then spend eternity trying to crack it (because it's passphrase-protected).
3. Paper Wallet: steal the wallet, then simply sweep the QR code to get the coins!

I'd go with a TREZOR...

paper wallets can have passphrases too. bip38 or bip39, cant remember. i used passphrase protected paper wallets for years till i swept them to sell off the bcash_lol crap.

now i have a trezor 1, trezor T and a ledger plus some paper wallets. spreading stuff out never hurts.

EDIT: Totscha already mentioned it (bip38) here

I already have reduced my normal exchange stash in advance of the 3rd too. I don't want to be exposed more than necessary if there is a shit storm - why take the risk?   I would not really want to see total chaos and exchanges collapsing if absolutely everybody did it, either.

I doubt enough will take part to cause any chaos, frankly - can you see the Coinbasers pulling coins off to their Trezors?  That said, assuming there are enough coins involved it could mean some dodgy exchanges that lack liquidity end up trying to buy in coins at market to cover if they get close to trouble. This could in turn will lead to shorts getting rekt to amplify things, meaning a spike.

On balance I think just enough, but not too much 'action' would be a great test for rehypothecation and spotting which trusted third parties are swimming naked. It's also putting a healthy warning shot across the bows of those tempted to dip their fingers in the till in future.

Because I reckon it's unlikely to be chaos, but might be enough to sweat the system (the Goldilocks amount of action) I shall keep a little of the play stash on Bitstamp on offer at above market in case of illiquidity causing that spike.

Happy New Year to all the WO.

Self-Custody is a right. Say no to"Non-custodial"

Proof of keys? I control my own keys thank you.

Trusted third parties? Isn't that an oxymoron?

I haven't had any coins on an exchange since MtGox. Luckily that mistake only cost me 50BTC. Never again.

Closest thing I have to a trusted third party is my Trezor which I somehow got talked into using against my better judgment. Luckily I only have 5BTC on it. I stopped using it last year after having it for less than half a year.

Obviously cold ("paper" wallet) storage is much more secure. Only I have control over the keys and they're never exposed to the internet except when I sweep a wallet into Mycelium to transfer coins and that's only small amounts for short periods of time.

This is why it's good to spread your stash between dozens or hundreds of small wallets. My biggest single wallet has a little over 30 coins in it (from pulling out what I had at Cavirtex after being Goxed) but I'm almost scared to sweep it to split it into smaller wallets because that would entail risking that many coins at once by exposing them to the internet.

I suppose I should empty my Trezor on Genesis Block Day as a way to assert ownership of my keys instead of trusting Trezor. Then again why wait until Jan. 3?

Jimbo, rest assured. With a TREZOR, you control the keys. Your seed words are the keys. It's just a different form of storage. On paper, you are storing them using ink. With a TREZOR, they are just electrons in a FLASH memory chip. They are both stored locally. No one else but you has control over them. And TREZOR has the added bonus of protecting your keys in case it's stolen (can't easily read those electrons unless you have the PIN). If your paper wallet gets stolen, your coins are gone (they're just a QR code sweep away)...
Yes, if trezor is as secure as advertised. Do we know this?

This is how much we know: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1OBIGslgGM

Basically:
The seed and PIN (sic!) can be extracted from a Trezor device. Not simply, but it is doable.

But... If you put a passphrase on the seed, the hacker can do shit...

So, which of the following is the easiest?

Why not both?
