Guys, I've been reading this crazy stuff posted by someone called "Shelby Moore" (whose messages were recently re-posted in the WO thread by user THX 1138), about how all coins held in SegWit addresses will be donated to miners, as they are free-to-spend coins in the legacy (pre-SegWit) blockchain, and only the coins held in legacy addresses will stay intact and belonging to their owners (private key holders). Supposedly, this attack will occur near the 2020 Halving event and will wreak havoc, resulting in the legacy chain being resurrected from the dead and becoming the dominant one, and the SegWit chain disintegrating into oblivion and causing a massive BTC price drop to near-zero.

What do you make of this?

Some more Qs:

1. Is it possible to move any of our coins held in SegWit addresses to legacy addresses (so that they would belong to the legacy chain if the above attack does happen)? Does the fact that, at some point in their history, those coins were held in SegWit addresses, taint them in any way? Would they still be considered as fully belonging to the legacy chain once moved to legacy addresses?

2. Would you do it? Do you think it's worth it?

3. Do these questions even make any sense?

4. Am I wasting my time with all this?

Thanks for any insights.

Many thanks to everyone who replied to my above post. I also don't believe such an attack will happen, and if it does, it will fail miserably, just like all the others before it. Bitcoin is growing fast and getting bigger and stronger day by day, and FUD is expected to intensify, especially around the time before/after the 2020 Halving. Business as usual.

@nutildah: I know there's currently one chain, but during the attack there will be a fork and two chains will exist at that time, the SegWit one (current) and the Legacy one. Those who keep their coins in Legacy addresses will end up with the same coins in the Legacy chain, plus the same amount of coins in the SegWit chain (like the BCH airdrop). Those who keep their coins in SegWit addresses will end up with the same coins in the SegWit chain, plus the same amount of coins in the Legacy chain, but those coins (in the Legacy chain) will be "free-to-spend" and will be taken from us and given as a reward to the mines for switching their mining operations over to the Legacy chain. So, those with coins in SegWit addresses will eventually end up with only those SegWit coins (in the SegWit chain), whose value will drop to near-zero due to the majority of the miners mining for the Legacy chain and enjoying the riches of their rewards.

Sorry for the spaghetti paragraph above, but that's how I understand it. It looks like total FUD to me, and it's not at all my intention to spread it, but I think it's worth discussing the different possibilities and the plausibility of different scenarios. More info = more security. Better safe than sorry.

For fuck sake already. Are you THAT boneheaded? Doing what is described is not any different than launching a hard fork attack of any kind, i.e. there IS NO ATTACK. Just stop.

So, those with coins in SegWit addresses will eventually end up with only those SegWit coins (in the SegWit chain), whose value will drop to near-zero due to the majority of the miners mining for the Legacy chain and enjoying the riches of their rewards.
You are really pushing it with these constructed lies. The scenario that you described is impossible as the governance structure doesn't work like that, not that you'd ever understand it.

but I think it's worth discussing the different possibilities and the plausibility of different scenarios. More info = more security. Better safe than sorry.
No, it is not. You're just an idiot attempting to waste valuable time from contributors. Anyone who has ever discussed this "attack" has harmed the main contributors in many ways.

BTC seems in the mood of touching sub-$8000 numbers today. Sad

Bitcoin is being a little bitch. Observing $7,948. This is fine.

EDIT: Don't even bother looking at @whalecalls. It's not pretty.

What's wrong with raising my concerns and asking for the opinions of fellow WO contributors? I have never ever attempted to spread FUD and never will. Those who know me can attest to that. Only a few days ago I came across this information (that came from inside the WO thread), and politely posted my concerns to the thread, because I trust your opinions. I got some answers, I accepted them, and I'm happy that all of you guys dismiss this information as FUD, which was also my initial reaction to it. I never offended anyone, as you are doing with your reply above.

Your comments about "constructed lies" and "attempting to waste valuable time from contributors", are totally a figment of your imagination. I would never post or do such things. My two posts were purely driven by my concerns. I hope you are able to understand and accept it.

What's wrong, you're asking? How long has SegWit been active? If the junkie-mumbling from a degenerate like Shellby can raise flags in you, then you need to reconsider your whole life. The garbage that you're worried about has been repeated ad-nausem and there is only one correct answer: The attack DOES NOT EXIST. Anyone who questions it again is intentionally (or not) harming the Core contributors among many other people in the sidelines that actually understand this shit unlike the wanking twat Shellby et. al. Essentially what people are doing with this is similar to asking Sipa (Peter) to debate vaccines causing autism rather than work on the protocol. The mentioned "attack" is probably less relevant to Bitcoin than the "vaccines-cause-autism" debate.

Need anything else?

Bitcoin is doing just fine. Just ordinary market gyrations between hope and fear. It will stay this dull for a long long period. Hint: still too much action in the WO thread to call the end of this ice age.

OK, let's do this again. The first time I read about this FUD was a few days ago. It got me worried. I trust WO. I posted my concerns here. I got answers. Your last reply, and the replies of others, reassure me that I don't need to worry about this stuff. It's all good, case closed. Why do you have to respond so aggressively? Am I so powerful and important as to be able to harm Core contributors with my questions? If nothing else, this whole discussion benefits those who may have been affected by that FUD. It clears things up and motivates us to dig deeper and understand the protocol, how it works, what's possible and what's not. The truth doesn't fear scrutiny.

Take it easy man, peace!

I like the idea of the Bargain Boyz being some kind of redneck trailer trash, but in all likelihood they probably look more like this:

Just your run-of-the-mill young Wall Streeters swooping up BTC for some billion dollar hedge fund. They probably don't even drink but take photo ops with new suits in classy NYC bars.

While I agree we are likely in for a flaccid season, the nature of the WO has changed utterly since the last Ice Age, so I'd be wary of waiting for total inactivity here as a signal. Certain McGeese will frankly never stop enlightening us and there will always be semis to be raised over hemis and whatnot (jojo69 termed this 'news aggregation'). Proof:

The first time I read about this FUD was a few days ago. It got me worried.
Fair but unsubstantiated. A quick fact-check (since you don't seem to fully understand how things work, which is fine since the supermajority doesn't) with a single search should have lifted it.

I trust WO.
Very dangerous and bad. Almost everyone here is self-interested; rarely anyone altruistic.

Why do you have to respond so aggressively?
Ad nauseam -> aggressive responses. Is fine as long as I'm right; would be very bad were it both wrong and aggressive.

Am I so powerful and important as to be able to harm Core contributors with my questions? If nothing else, this whole discussion benefits those who may have been affected by that FUD. It clears things up and motivates us to dig deeper and understand the protocol, how it works, what's possible and what's not.
There is no discussion to begin with as I've told you. Should we discuss things that can't affect Bitcoin ever in regards to Bitcoin as a serious discussion? Roll Eyes Re: harming Core contributors you missed the point. That's the whole goal by Shellby et. al. and they keep winning at it, which just shows why you absolutely should not trust WO as many WO-members initially got worried about it.

Hope all of that has helped. Kiss
