argh ok ty blitz. we only have ourselves to blame for keeping our shit in these exchanges.
It's not like there are any good alternatives. All of them are shit.

We'll probably have to wait until there are US based exchanges registered as MSB in all states.

Bitstamp leaked their customer email addresses by the way, that's why all the new phishing attempts. Reminiscent of Emptygox 2011. Fuck all the operating major Bitcoin exchanges.

source?
Eleuthria, admin of the BTCGuild mining pool, did the research on it: http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1zaqvy/bitstamp_email_list_used_to_spread_mtgox_malware/cfs21qr

Quote
Bitstamp's email list was confirmed stolen ~2 weeks ago, when a boatload of emails claiming to be from support@btcguild.com (but not sent from any of the BTC Guild mail servers) went out talking about a 3.201 bitcoin transfer. After replying to the people shouting at me for being a scammer, I was eventually able to narrow the source of the leak to Bitstamp at the very least, and likely a few other sources on top of it.

I informed Bitstamp that they had at least a breach on their email list, if not the rest of their system. At first they denied it, but in a follow up they eventually admitted to it.

They then sent out a little security update email mentioning 2FA/password security.

TL;DR:

FUCK EMPTYGOX
FUCK BITCRAMP
AND FUCK BTC-PEE TOO

After that warning from some members here about stamp I will get my coins out there today. I am just not sure how but I must do it.

This is just getting stupid. After Im confident of the reversal and fairly sure its choo choo time Im getting all of my funds off exchanges and not trading until im confident in a competent exchange.
I have Bitstamp verified account and I never received the gox scam mail neither the btcguild scam mail or any other bitcoin related scam or spam. I don't think those are connected.

Ok so the last hour i did some reading on random news sites and forums etc.
I've seen some hate against Bitcoin in the past but the stuff i read today! It looks like everybody who doesn't actually own any coins hates it! [ ... ] I'm actually a bit shocked. I knew it was bad but this bad?

Is that hate directed at bitcoin itself?  I believe it is directed at the bitcoin pushers and hypers.

The message they get across is "if you don't invest in bitcoin, you must be very stupid indeed".  Well, guess what, people don't have much love for those who call them idiots...

A lot of the hate is directed at the bitcoin USERS. You cant shout at bitcoin itself and mock bitcoin can you? The point is, that the level of hate and mockery directed at the users is a cult in the same way that you describe bitcoin pushers and hypers, if people are so sure its going to fail and its all a big Ponzi why not get on your merry way and be happy in the knowledge that you avoided the financial turmoil.

But thats not what people do is it? They take to the internet with told you so's that the bitcoin users couldn't give two shits about. I mean look at the price why would anyone in bitcoin care that all the people who missed out and were crying at $1100 are about to miss out again?

If someone is expressing their pov after at least basic research on the topic then they deserve an ear but people screaming from the rooftops "Bitcoin is bankrupt" or "The CEO of bitcoin took everyones money" rightly deserve the disdain from members of the community.

I was complaining to CampBX on chat about their lack of volume. They responded "We don't think we have low volume." I pulled all my BTC out an hour later. F@!$%ng amateurs.

Funny thing is as more and more people pull their coins off exchanges the supply will begin to dwindle  Wink

LoL! The biggest volume is in tiny-childish countries like "Sloveja", "Eslobeya" or something like that.... Can you believe it my friend??!??!

They hate it because because they have missed have biggest opportunity in their life.

Which opportunity are you referring to?  Putting all their money into BTC at 1100 USD, and being forced to sell them at 700 USD?  Or putting all their money into MtGOX and losing it all?

Perhaps I am being a little harsh with the exchanges; clearly they are the first attempts by hobbyists and we needed them in the very beginning. But now, we have moved on to a stage where we cannot afford to have experimental exchanges – perhaps even having such exchanges out there with the highest volume is detrimental nowadays. What is sorely needed is professionals who already have experience building financial infrastructure. Wall Street, not basement geek.

Same here regarding the Bitstamp account, plus my email was not leaked before all this and I only got those mails fairly recently, so I am near certain of eleuthria's conclusion. Have you checked your spam folder? Gmail for example has excellent spam filtering.

Bringing LTC into BTCChina showed perfectly how dead the Chinese market really is. If the same thing would of happened in December, then LTC would have probably had risen to 100$. Now it got one foolish spike up and after that it's pretty dead with showing low demand and weak attempts to rise.

BTC-China is a very strange marketplace, I cannot tell wether they have real trade or just arbitrage.  Anyway they have a lot less volume than Bitstamp.

Let's see what happens when Huobi starts LTC trading, as its CEO promised.

The thing to consider with LTC is that it is even more concentrated and therefor more manipulated then BTC. When the previous bullrun happened, then there was this first pre-pump, followed by couple of days forcing the price back down and building strong upwards pressure, and then releasing it, creating a very fast surge upwards. It could be the same case here, but hard to tell yet. I'm not very certain about the entire crypto market in China. How much of the market data is faked or how much of the market is actually played by westerners. I think that right now it's best to wait and see if the pumps will be activated or not. If history repeats itself, then there will be this nice opportunity to earn a quick buck. Keeping my fiat in BTC-E for the time being.

If you quote please quote the whole thing. I'm referring to those who witnessed the 100x or 1000x appreciation, who learnt bitcoin before 2013.

By the way, I couldn't think of a single reason to put one's all money on gox

I think if eleuthria is to be trusted, then there is probably no question in it. Furthermore, Bitstamp themselves distributed email warnings of phishers I think shortly afterwards. It's possible that only a part of the mails were leaked, or that somehow yours wasn't sent to.

If we do some digging, maybe we can get it officially from a Bitstamp rep.

Rule of thumb: If lots of noise is made and Bitstamp does not officially deny the accusation, it is probably true. Cheesy

How does fiat compare to a lottery ticket?

Anything which costs something and the future value cannot be calculated with 100% precision is clearly like a lottery ticket.  Roll Eyes

I agree with that line more or less, but I can think of a lot of other reasons how those mail addresses were acquired. Didn't read yet the link you gave, will do that now though

Edit: Meh. Read it. Not convinced at all, zero evidence. Might as well that the guild leaked ir/was hacked.
