Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

Lets not get too exited about going there unless you like being murdered.

*give it ten years for corn to work its magic.

Quote
On 20 June 2019, Bukele announced his "Territorial Control Plan" which would increase policing of certain areas of the country in an effort to combat high crime rates and gangs in the country.[34][35] Both the National Civil Police (PNC) and the Armed Forces of El Salvador (FAES) would also be equipped with better firearms, ammunition, and vests as a part of the Territorial Control Plan.[34] As a result of his Territorial Control Plan, El Salvador's homicide rate fell 52 homicides per 100,000 people in 2018, the highest in the world at the time,[36] to only 3.7 homicides per 100,000 people in January 2020.[37]

Bukele founded the International Commission Against Impunity in El Salvador (CICIES) (es) on 6 September 2019.[38] The institution's purpose is to combat a variety of crimes, including drug trafficking, corruption, and white collar crimes.[38] He also established an anti-corruption unit within the National Civil Police which would cooperate directly with CICIES.[38]

... as per wiki El President is something of a populist autocrat who's cleaned the place up considerably in two short years, sacked a whole bench of corrupt supreme court judges and still has >90% approval ratings, just got voted back in on a super majority

... tbh I like a good autocrat, especially if they are competent, straight, honest-shooters and democracy has gone off the rails. Democracy is not perfect and countries come in all cultures, shapes and sizes, take a look at Singapore for a hugely successful autocracy.

Well to be fair the largest percentage of murders since he got in office are the gov rather than straight up criminals but it is going to take years before its safe for a westerner to walk around that country without guards. I give it a good decade and if they stay on the Bitcoin standard they will be a world leader in area in 20 years.

Meh, Panama is also considered "not safe" but I've been here 2 years with no problems.

It does require some vigilance and personal responsibility which a lot of people talk about but don't actually understand.

I lived in between two towns whose main economy is drugs. I didn't bother them, they didn't bother me. I had big dogs in my fenced yard to not make it easy for them and followed some simple rules like...hire a local maid that is trustworthy (you will go through a few). Don't go to the wrong places at night. Don't complain about their super loud music to police.

Here in Panama I lived near Colon which is the murder capital of Panama. I know not to go into that city after dark.

Worst that happened to us as a group was the well known local thief broke into a friend's house and stole his laptop and cell phones. He followed the standard procedure of paying the "middle man" $100 to retrieve his shit. The thief's sister is the DA so it's pointless to rely on the government to do anything about it.

any statement from proudhon when he will move to El Salvador?

EDIT: BTW, what has happened to JorgeStolfi?

That dumbass is still posting the exact same things he was posting back in 2011 and on...  But mostly from Twitter now.

Sometimes i wonder if he is a multi-millionaire thanks to bitcoin.  Should be.  Absolutely NO REASON for him not to have a few hundred of them just as a hedge/kicks.

Then again he'd have sold so long ago...

What a jackass he is.

You see it don't you? Not everyone does.  I figure MOST of us WO folks do...  Crazy.  We are STILL so early.

It's about to get so crazy.

El Salvador has volunteered to be the first country to go live in PRODUCTION with the lightning network.  They will be richly rewarded for this.

I think those laser eyes are so silly...  But I almost want to put them on all my images now.

There's nothing silly about a 100k bitcoin though Smiley

This could be a serious problem for Western Union.....

Western what?

A very expensive and a shitty service to transfer funds.

I don't want to get into a stone throwing competition but...

These fees aren't exactly inexpensive for purchasing the corn.  While it's always not stated in the coinATMradar.com summary, many machines also charge flat fees.  Close to me, I can pay flat fees of 3 to 15 dollars on top of the exchange rates of 8.5% to 18%.  On top of that, if I don't want to let it scan my ID, I am limited in some cases to $200 max transaction.  Bitcoin is awesome but bitcoin ATMs have some catching up to do.
If I don't get paid in bitcoin and need to convert before sending the coin to my family, I'm going to be gouged at an ATM.

Using Moneygram to send $200US for cash pick up to my mother in El Salvador, it costs me $4.99US - it's neither shitty nor expensive.
Using Western Union to send $200US for cash pick up to my sister in El Salvador, it costs me $11.00US and if that seems like a lot, consider any of the conversion scenarios at my local ATMs (above)

The money gougers are adapting - time for bitcoin ATMs to do the same.

No.. they are toast already.  Way too late for them if they have not figured out what their new business is.

Kodak started selling SD cards.  Western Union should maybe sell Azte.co vouchers or something.  They make buggy whips.

There is compelling evidence to show that for over 30 years, members of the U.S. military and the CIA helped organize, train, and fund death squad activity in El Salvador.

When the U.S.-inspired civil war was over, at least 75,000 people were reported murdered and many thousands displaced.
