A functioning society requires, at some level, that people behave decently and in good faith.

If a society degenerates so badly that people take more than they can eat from an all-you-can-eat buffet, then maliciously sneak the destruction of food to evade a policy against waste, then that society is toast.

This stung out to me.
From the geek perspective, a society is implicitly defined and founded by its normality. What goes the most, is valid (== minorities aren't).
So, if most of societies members are large groups with shared mentality, their members can only define themselves on a bigger-faster-better-stronger basis, which leads to all sorts of competition. All kind of negative effects on environment and, at least parts of society, are triggered by this, as well in local as in global societies. There's no real individuailty, because the system, based on normality, doesn't freely allow it. What is outside of social boundaries has to integrate to be a vital part of society.
And, let's be honest, wasting of food is a 1st world problem, because "we" produce about twice as much food as we'd need to feed the world, but most of it gets thrown away.
No tomatoes with spots, no "rusty" bananas, only beautiful food in the shelves, while the (optical) low quality food gets thrown away. Bigger-better-faster-stronger?
Better for the society that is manipulated by advertising media to accept only healthy, perfectly shiny looking raw food.

There's that.

And good faith...
For example, the world sells grain to 3rd world countries in "good faith", while nobody involved seems to be interested to enable them to grow their own.
Good faith does much harm more often than not. Look closely.

I’m not trying to find out…

hisslyness, I suspect that you are being intentionally obtuse.  Nonetheless, this needs emphasis for the sake of others:

Just because there's apparently no trace of you owning Bitcoin, interacting with Bitcoin, doesn't make it any less illegal

So what?

(not the right choice of word, but keeping in the theme of less vulnerable),

I chose my words carefully.  You did not read them carefully.

if the above scenario was to come true. You are in the same boat as everyone else!

No, I am not:  I am in the boat where I am free to decide whether or not I choose voluntarily to comply with this hypothetical law that I believe I have an ethical obligation to resist.  Resistance would, in this case, be quite simple for me:  Ignore the bad law.

>99% of WO hatters are not in that boat:  They are known Bitcoiners.  KYC records link them to some or all of their coins; mass-surveillance would link them to anything they believe they can get away with.  Anything that they try to hide can most likely be caught—I say that as an expert on anonymity and, thus perforce, deanonymization; disagree with me at your own risk.  “They” here most likely includes you.

At this juncture, I must remind the intelligent reader:  My point was not to put on some show of bravado, but to the contrary!

I am worried about laws adverse to Bitcoin, even though such laws are personally irrelevant to me.

The fools who brag that governments can’t stop Bitcoin are the types who would easily be stopped from using Bitcoin.  Easily.

I have a high degree of financial privacy, because I have an activist streak.  All of my money originates from legal sources.  Regardless, I decided long ago that my money is nobody’s business but my own.  I decided to live the cypherpunk dream.  Accordingly, I am actually in a position where I can say:  Your law is not law.

Now, I am trying to shake people out of their complacency—because I have an activist streak.  And I am horrified to see people boasting that governments can’t stop Bitcoin.  It is childish, stupid, and irresponsible.  Stop it.  Not for my sake—it does not directly affect me.  For Bitcoin’s sake.  It’s bad for Bitcoin.

For those who need a reminder of the context, this is bad for Bitcoin:

This is even worse than “Billionaires in my following, go ahead, see what happens”.

“U.S. government, go ahead, see what happens.”

Politicians really have basic problems in understanding Bitcoin - because who cares what they think - Satoshi didn't ask permission from anyone when he invented Bitcoin...

>99% of WO hatters are not me, and not anything like me.
Why you gotta be like that?
Why you gotta rip that out of context?
Because I'm only concerned about your use of the term "hatters"

Oh, that made you mad?  Is “hatters” politically incorrect in some way of which I was unaware?

“Mad Hatters” sounds like a good nickname for denizens of the Wall. Wink

(h/t to my Evil Hat(TM) for the idea.)

>99% of WO hatters are not me, and not anything like me.

Why you gotta be like that?

Why you gotta rip that out of context?

In the context, I was pointing out that on an individual level, I am much less vulnerable to any sort of government action than >99% of people here.  Not invincible—nobody is!—but much less vulnerable.

Although I have never specifically concealed my Bitcoinism, my general privacy practices are so tight that there is no record anywhere that I even know what Bitcoin is.  Thus if, hypothetically, my local government were to ban Bitcoin tomorrow with a penalty of 10 years in prison for HODLing BTC, then I could afford to ignore that if I so choose.

How many people here can say that without being fantastically foolish?  A few, but certainly less than 1%.

How many of the types who brag that “governments can’t stop Bitcoin” can say that?  Probably none:  Fools usually have poor opsec.

How many have never done KYC on a cryptocurrency exchange?
Also relevant:  I have never done KYC on a cryptocurrency exchange.  >99% of WO hatters are not me, and not anything like me.
Never done a Google search on Bitcoin-related terms that could be traced to them?  Never discussed Bitcoin on social media accounts that could be traced to them?  Never even browsed a Bitcoin-related webpage (or for many years, any webpage) without strong privacy protections?

I emphasize again that I am not invulnerable.  Nobody is.  But I am much, much less vulnerable than >99% of WO hatters.

I care so much about what governments do to Bitcoin, because I care about Bitcoin.

>99% of WO hatters are not me, and not anything like me.

Why you gotta be like that?

 Phew!.. Thank fuck for that!...

If public lurkers judge me by the gracefulness, intelligent discourse, and flowing eloquence of my critics, then I am doing great here.

If you are doing exactly this you are creating a reason for your government to search you out.

But I will tell you I live in NJ I visit NY a lot very late at night. I wear a bulletproof vest for safety and I am now committing a crime if I do wear the vest. No gun no weapon just a vest. I have to decide if I will wear the vest next time I go late at night or comply with this new "gun safety law" So I do hear you about f'd up laws and resisting them.

seems 99% of us are not like anyone else here either judging by the many differing viewpoints that are discussed in this thread. only common denominator here is the only one of importance.. we agree bitcoin is the future. all else pales in comparison.

True enough.

Rephrase what I said, according to its context:  In the hypothetical event of a total ban, >99% of people here could be easily stopped from using Bitcoin.

If the ban were global (or even just covered the strategically most powerful jurisdictions), the rest of us could then have fun anonymously trading encrypted virtual pizza NFTs for bitcoins—since the market as we now know it would cease to exist.

I urge people to stop blowing off the threats of anything from regulatory attacks on use and trading of Bitcoin, to restrictions on mining, to (less likely, but still possible) widespread bans.

phil, why bother with the vest?  Don’t worry.  You can’t get shot, because it’s illegal for criminals to have guns.

for anyone of us in the USA (you know, land of the "free") a government ban would certainly stop almost all of us in their tracks. even if youre not kyc'd anywhere, use tor, decentralized exchanges etc i would wager they would find out anyway. maybe if you live totally off the grid and never go near civilization it could be done but thats not for me. call me a wimp or whatever, i need modern society to live comfortably. especially modern medicine.

understand: i HATE kyc and the government snooping in our business to the point they just hoover all info they can to store and analyze  for "security/terrorism/etc" purposes even when its not currently useful. as they can always make some law in the future and look back at all that collected data to retroactively get you on some law that doesnt even exist right now.

look, i will mess with a lot of things but one entity i wont mess with is the irs. they have NO sense of humor. makes me glad i did not hide my btc gains even before the irs targeted it. call me a wimp but thats what we here in the USA need to do to exist in peace.

bleh.

Regulatory attacks are another potential threat—a big one.  This post is already too long; and I need to analyze the Lummis bill carefully, before applauding her too much.  Let’s just say, on a general note, I am concerned about the potential that legislation may draw Bitcoin into a regulatory quagmire, while tossing Bitcoiners a bone with some obvious things such as exempting small purchases from capital gains tax.

I agree with the general sentiment of your above abridged tome, and will also be looking more carefully at the bill to the extent I can.

But maybe I am too easy to please, but I think the exemption for small purchases to be taxable is a very powerful little stinger when it comes to what this bill could mean.  The ability to begin moving Bitcoin around for commerce without the tax encumbrance is an important  change.

Think of it this way...  You are an early bitcoinner in the US.  You can now spend and replace your bitcoin for groceries and reduce your cap gains to zero at the time of purchase $200 at a time.

We need to catch up with Africa, after all.
