Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

There is an exchange for BTC <-> NMC. Also, shouldn't this be in the Economy/Marketplace section?

Probably, but I'm a newbie to wants to buy.
I'll take a look again at the exchange, but I only have .1BTC and wanted to try and just go straight for the NCs.

There isn't an exchange setup for NMC <-> USD/EUR so it is unlikely that you will get someone to sell you Namecoins. I think you should just buy some BTC and trade it for Namecoins. Would probably be quicker than waiting around to see if someone will sell you Namecoins.
