Mining without extra fans

Hey there

I just bought a Gigabyte HD5870 and got about 300mh/s while mining.
My non-mining temperature is at 60°C and my mining temperature goes up to 98°C (I stop it there because I don't know if it could take any harm). How much heat can a 5870 take?

CPU & MoBo run at 60°C, no problems.

But I got a ATA HDD sitting there with freaking 120°C all the time. Anything to do with that?

So should i get an extra fan or underclocking or what? And where can I find a comprehensive list of flags?

Which operating system are you using? Are you running in a case or caseless? If in a case, does your case have good ventilation?

The first thing I would suggest is turning up your video card's fan to 80%-100% and seeing if that helps. Those temperatures are definitely abnormal -- especially if not overclocked. You should aim for < 80 C IMO.

In Windows, you can use MSI Afterburner to adjust the fan speed.

In Linux, you can use:

export DISPLAY=:0
aticonfig --pplib-cmd "set fanspeed 0 100"

My guess from your other temps is that you are running in a case and have very poor airflow.

98C is way too high (though won't melt your card for sure). HDD 120C on the otherhand, is totally crazy, you can cook an egg on it. Get a 240mm case fan and blow hard at it

As said in the topic I don't have any fans. Built in PSU, built in CPU, two built in GPU - that's all!

I just left the side open because of the newly installed hardware but after 5cm there's a wall of my desk so it's not that open.

Lol, about 5 years? It's a 120 GB Thing. Shouldnt have been any colder earlier, or?

I have a Sapphire 5870 overclocked to 900 core / 314 memory, hitting 392 MH/s, and with the fan at 40%, the temp is steady around 73C. The computer is in the basement, where it is cooler, but the case does not have any extra fans directly near the card. The only fans are on top of the case over the CPU, and surrounding the PSU. (case is Antec P182, PSU is on the bottom).

Have you tried turning up the GPU fan yet? And again, what OS?

lol that's a long time. Does the temperature ever move from 120C? You may have a broken temperature sensor. Try touching the hard drive. If it's too hot to leave your finger on it, then you should get some air moving on it. As for your other parts, you really should get a fan for them. I'm used to idle temps 25C-20C  lower than your idle.  My load temps are generally less than 60C, except the GPU - mine maxes just below 70C.

GPU Fan is running at 100% while mining.

System cools down to 45° while not in use, graphic-card 60°, HDD 108°


The box even says its 25% less hot. Wonder how much the card is used by a pc game.

Windows 7 64Bit!


Edit: I seem not to be able to switch on voltace control in Afterburner. Where's my problem (turned it on in afterburner's settings, did restart the program, not the pc - do I have to restart PC?)?

A $5 case fan is a great investment for an expensive graphics card. Newegg has a ton of fans, shipping time is the only concern from there. Also, when you get decent airflow through your case, you should be leaving it closed. Having the sides off will disrupt the ideal airflow and cause the air to not follow the in-the-front out-the-back/top model.

I have 2 5870 running in 2 different boxes at 940 core, fan at 60%.  They are both under 70C

those are dreamvalues. Below 70°C at 60% fan! I get over 90° with 100% Fan. And two crashes (maybe from using Afterburner).

Was your 5870 used?  If so, make sure to clean out the fans and internal heat sink fins.  It'll make a world of difference if they're clogged with dust.

Buy fans. Get air moving THROUGH your case (in one end and OUT the other end).

You are very lucky your hard drive hasn't died - I hope you have good backups.

Keep your GPU under 85c and your cpu under 65c. If you don't you will shorten the life of both dramatically or just kill them flat out.

Yes it was used, but it was very clean. Didn't notice any dust  (didnt look that much, but you know..). May it be returned because it was too hot? I bought it as a retour-ware.

What are your ambient temps like in hell! Get some water cooling!

I got a fan doing 1500 RPM. I installed it in the mid-rear and it does like, nothing. CPU and stuff seems 2° colder but thats all.

If I'm running guiminer I get 110°C and the system crashes.

Looks like a broken card...

For the love of god man, buy a fan!  I have 8 of them in my case and I'm still worried about my 75 C temperature.  If you're running at 98 C, you won't be for long.  A fan is cheaper than a new GPU.  You can get a good one from newegg.com for $10.
