I get what you're saying, but an hour a day just to be able to post to a forum? Not all of us have that kind of time to spend on a single website.

Before Bitcointalk the only "forum" I had ever posted on was a support one (which was VBulletin based from memory) back in the early 2000s - now I have well over a thousand posts and am developing an exciting Bitcoin project - if you had told me that I would be spending an hour or so per day (at least) reading and often posting on a forum back in 2010 I would have laughed at you.

I think Bitcoin and this forum quickly become more like an obsession than a hobby - I would recommend you take the red pill and join in the wildest ride since the internet became known to the masses!

It's not the 5 posts that bothers me, it's the 4 hours. I've been on here for over a week and have only logged 2 hours 22 minutes. As a marketing professional, I believe 4 hours not only cuts out spammers, but also cuts out many legitimate prospects who get too frustrated with the limits and decide to move on.

An hour, hour and a half.. sure, but four hours? That's going to take me weeks to get!

I think it is promoting spam but only in the newbie section so it is OK for others.

No rush to post

Kind of an assumption, don't you think?

you should spend itme looking around and getting a feel for a forum

Lots of people read this board without ever having an account.
Or maybe you follow a link from twitter to a topic particularly relevant to you, you try to make a reply... oh.

posting useless shit and rable

I think that was the OPs point, you end up having to post useless shit and babble just to get onto the main board, which is not what everybody came here for.

Surely there's a better way?

Just how a lot of forums work. Kinda silly but I guess it doesn't really hurt anything.

This is the first forum I've seen this must post here before elsewhere.  I don't mind, especially since this is such a volatile topic/technology.  But, it did take me 20 minutes to find out why I couldn't post elsewhere.

You are looking in a wrong place. 13 hours is your total time.
BarryB is telling the truth. He has only 3 hours in more than a week.

Conclusion: 4 hours are too much. And 5 posts are useless spam. Wouldn't it be better if newbies could just solve some "captchas"?

You need to keep clicking in order for the "time spent online" to be incremented - so whilst it can take a while even if you spend only an hour a day on the forum then provided that you are actively clicking on numerous topics (rather than just leaving the webpage sitting) it shouldn't even take a week to have accumulated the required time (am pretty sure it only took myself a day).

I get what you're saying, but an hour a day just to be able to post to a forum? Not all of us have that kind of time to spend on a single website.

This is the same way I feel. I actually am just less inclined to stay on the forum now because of this. I only wanted help in another thread and now I am basically forced to say random crap in different threads to get to the (admitantly easy) post requirement and have to stay around for 4 hours. I mean really, what the hell is there to do in a newbie forum. Im guessing the 4 hours is to get you to join in with the community but that sort of stuff should be after we are able to post.

I do think that the 5 post rule is normal for most forums. Its highly unlikley that people will spam, although you get the ones that do! Undecided

It is suppose to let us familiarize ourself with the forum and the rules. However, some people just see it as a barrier and keep making unmeaningful/spam post to increase their post count. Good thing is the moderator actually pick them up fast.
