I think the wallet.dat shouldn't be stored on your HDD, transfer it to your usb stick and just plug it in if you want to send or to recieve btc. Makes the whole thing more secure  |

If the wallet encryption code would finally be added to the official client, there would be no more wallet stealers out there.
But unfortunately the wallet encryption has been delayed for some later (0.4) version.

Truecrypt is good stuff.
And always keep some good malware detection and removal tools on your system, keep their definitions and engines up to date, and schedule them to scan every bit of data on your system at night or something. If you've got a bunch of money, then e-mail a copy of your encrypted wallet file to yourself, then put a copy on two flashdrives. One can go in your cookie jar, and one in your safety deposit box.

I beleive that wallet.dat shouldn't be stored on you're computer unencrypted when it's not used, you can back up it on for example wuala and add it to you're %appdata% only when you need it.

You can encrypt your back up but normally your account resides on your computer (unless I am missing something). Therefore do you need several accounts, whereby one is only used to store coins in?

Yes, i believe you have to have your wallet file in place for bitcoin to work on your PC or else it would create a new empty wallet file.

I recently created accounts with Dwolla and bitmarket.eu. I was excited to purchase 8 bitcoins. Shortly after the purchase transaction was completed, my account was magically drained to a 0 balance!
Do I have any recourse?
I’m currently scanning my machine with ESET NODE32 Antivirus to see if I can catch something. How can I practice safe trading and prevent this problem from recurring?

From where did you lose the bitcoins: your bitmarket account or the wallet on your personal computer? There should be some dox either way as to the address the btc went to. The loss was from my bitmarket account. My account history shows a confirmed transaction for -8 BTC. I'm guessing that it's from an unauthorized withdrawal. No one else has physical access to my computer. I never shared my bitmarket password. Can this be key logging? Thank you for your assistance. |
