This was very unfortunate mistake on the sender part - he mistakenly wanted to send 2.5 BTC and not include it as a fee.
This transaction fee had nothing to do with current high (but not that ludicrous) fee policy.
I always say: there should be hard coded limit build in every bitcoin wallet preventing you from including ridiculous fee like that.
Also I wonder if AntPool pitied him and gave his money back, even though they have no obligation to do that...

Trust me, as long as users are free to set unrestricted transaction fee it will happen sooner or later. This is not isolated incident
We know about this case only because unfortunate sender tried to seek help on bitcointalk, but think how many users sent the wrong fee and never complained about it.

True. As you say, a hard coded limit or even a notifier/warning that pops up should be included in wallets. Something like if a set max/min fee is reached, there'd at least be a warning. Then, if they still send a such a ludicrous amount of fee despite the pop-up warning, that'd just be considered a 'donation' of sorts.  Grin

Yes, they did give back 2.5 BTC. The fees were already distributed to the miners, but even so, Bitmain still decided to return the same amount, from their own pocket.

Just a mistake, and lucky for those have repays : Cheesy

Bitcoin Miner Repays Customer Who Accidentally Paid 2.5 Bitcoins Transaction Fee Smiley
And all well done here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1818791.0 Smiley
Just skimmed through the topic, that's really a generous thing for a mining pool to return the fees from their own pocket. That guy really messed up big time but was lucky this time, we should learn from this and be careful while sending manual fees.

Agreed that he's just lucky this time that the mining pool has given him back the excess fees that he accidentally sent. But just as Mining Pool said " it's not their responsibility to give back the money since it's his fault and not theirs'. Better to double check things before proceeding to what we will do.

Hardly generous, it was Antpool.  Antpool have thousands of Bitcoin to play with when they take the transaction fees and a 2.5% fee from the block rewards.  The only real reason that they would have done this is for PR purposes - if this fee problem wasn't made or going to be made public I highly doubt that they would have done it, which is why they publicly stated that they had.

Well sometines the fees are on the high side when the mempool is flooded.  https://blockchain.info/charts/mempool-count
I once had to pay 0.01 BTC fee on a 0.2 Transaction.

But as stated this seem to be some PR stunt of Antpool

Then I will state it was not a publicity stunt for the record.  Bitmain/Antpool would have somehow managed to count on my involvement in their scheme without my knowledge or consent.
It's quite simple really.  An unfortunate event in which they unknowingly became involved was brought to their attention and they made the decision to remedy that situation at a cost to themselves.  To them, 2.5 BTC is a pittance; to a student, it is a fortune.  Their decision was easy to make.  Why is everyone over-thinking this?  How many newspapers picked up this story?  It wasn't on CNN... nobody called to interview me or even e-mailed or PM'd me over the matter.  If it was a publicity stunt, Bitmain failed to take advantage of it.  One would think it they had put all this forethought into the scheme they would have planned on a follow-through.

wow, that fee which is amazing, maybe he did deliberate action by giving tax 2.5 BTC, and may also be an expression of gratitude for the gift that has been given of the BTC. or maybe he made a mistake and think that he is sending 2.5 BTC. already a lot going on with the fee on 1 BTC.

That's outrageous and I find it difficult to believe that one will even pay more than half a BTC as tax fees. Strange times indeed.
