Hardware Advice for an old GPU miner returning to the flock.

Got a good contract with my electricity provider so I am coming back in to the sport.

1)First advice I would like is for a motherboard that can support 5-6 GPU (with riser of course).

I don't care if it is amd or intel, I just want the total CPU-MOBO-RAM cost to be low.

2) I am thinking of going 470's or 480's. Do 480's worth the price difference? Do 8 GB cards have any advantage?

3) How many watts psu for a 5-6 480's rig?


Finally what is best for GPU mining ATM Zec? are there any other options?

Hey there,

1) asrock H81 BTC pro, asrock h97 anniversary, asrock h61 btc pro, biostar TB85, biostar b250,  MSI Z97 Gaming 5, MSI Z97-45, MSI Z170a gaming pro carbon, MSI 170a krait gaming 3x

2) 480 are slightly faster than 470, buy only if the price difference doesn't exceed 10% or so. Same goes for 8GB version (marginaly faster in most cases)

3) 6 GPU if you're mining XMR, 1000W is enough, for ZEC it is still ok, on ETH, especially if you are dual mining you should consider 1200W PSU as you rig might draw over 900W power.

whats your opinion on  ASROCK FM2A88X+ BTC seen some bad comments on newegg...


ASROCK FM2A88X+ pro 3 is another one.


These are amd boards that I plan to combine with a dual core cpu. I heard that the cpu must have AES if I want to mine monero?


Finally what about Asrock H81 Pro-G?

How about the ASROCK FM2A88X+ BTC & Athlon X4 combo for a 5 GPU rig?

Wont the x4 have much more grunt for genoil miner or monero miner compared to a Pentium?

Should work neatly. Cpu usage is not too high for mining and less powerful celerons manage to do the job as well.
The asrock FM2 is ok if you want to build a 5 GPU 'only' rig.

Hello Ol Timer. Things haven't changes since you left, the Z77, Z87, Z97, H81 based boards are still the best for mining.
Unfortunately, like you mentioned, they are hard to find. See if you can find an Asrock H81 Pro BTC V2 board, or a Biostar TB85 board.
Good alternatives are the MSI Gaming 5 Z97 which support 7 cards, but are slightly more expensive.
In any case, holler here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1806061.420 many good folks from the EU who can help you get boards.

Now, the ASROCK FM2A88X+ BTC - I started mining last year and these were the only boards I could find. You cant use Athlon X4 cpu's with em coz its a socket FM2+, so get the cheapest Am4 APU like the A4020.
I have 8 of these boards, running 5 cards off a 750W Gold PSU each and never a hiccup in the last 10 months of continuous operation, so these are pretty good.
