I got an Avalon 4.1 miner and I couldn't get it to work at its rated 1Th/s.
With command "./cgminer -c default.conf --avalon4-miningmode 2", where default.conf is the example config modified to connect to the Kano pool:
Code:

If I add "--avalon4-freq 450:400:380" to the options, the "200MHz" changes to "420MHz" but actual performance remains unchanged. The unit pulls about 11A when, from what I have read, it should be more like 40-50A at rated speed.

Tried two different PCs, both the official and Avalon4 versions of cgminer, and two different server PSUs with the same result.

Is there some setting I'm overlooking? I have experience mining altcoins, but the Avalon is my first Bitcoin mining setup.

Are you running the actual Avalon 4 software on an rpi to control it? There should be a gui with all of the settings already in place.

Stop buying industrial miners, running them at home, and then complaining about the noise.

The only Raspberry Pi image I could find would not boot on either my Raspberry Pi 3 or Raspberry Pi Zero. Can you point me to one you recommend?

I would prefer to have it hosted on a PC since I have an older one (a server, actually) with some nice features like RAID, ECC, and other fault tolerance measures that would really come in handy when the setup is moved to a remote location. (I plan to do a lot more than just Bitcoin mining with it.)

As the Avalon 4 is a very old miner that probably burns more electricity than you make back in bitcoin I doubt anyone ported the Avalon firmware from the original RPi, I dont think you will find an image that runs on newer RPis :/

The remote location in question (my cousin's place) has electricity included in rent. (No, I'm not planning on stuffing that place with miners - just that one Avalon box and a dual Xeon server.) I got the miner and its special USB cable for $90 (including shipping) from a friend. If it would actually operate at 1Th/s or more, it ends up quite close to the h/s/$ as the going rate for the Antminer S7, but wouldn't need the underclocking or other noise mitigation measures that would be required for the S7. (I'm doing it mostly for fun. Making a profit would be a nice bonus.)

What I'm surprised about is that the image will not boot on the Pi Zero which has the same CPU as the Pi 1. Maybe it's a corrupt image so a link to a known good one can help.

EDIT: My friend got back to me with the SD image she used. It booted just fine on my Pi 3 and the Avalon is nicely hashing away at 1Th/s and pulling 50A. Smiley Now to figure out how to get the correct version of cgminer for a PC...

After a bit of binary searching through the github, I found the culprit:
https://github.com/Canaan-Creative/cgminer/commit/5125448abed8253d91c4a71953c89f2ae8666997
It appears to do a bit of frequency optimization, but for whatever reason it fails at least on my Avalon 4.1. (I did install the latest firmware during the debugging process.) If anyone else has an Avalon 4/4.1 that doesn't work properly with the latest cgminer, this is the version you want:
