I think that patience and discipline is not enough. It's mandatory to know math, statistics, probability theory,
 all of the important news, to know what is important and what's not.  

While all of that will make your life easier as a trader I this not mandatory to be an expert on any of those fields to be successful at trading, the most important thing is to read the most books you can and learn from them and then apply that knowledge to your advantage.

You can read a lot of good information from books, but only practice makes the user a good and professional trader. For those who do not do very well with this task, they are advised not even to take this business into account.
