so the problem is I forgot the password to the wallet but I do have the seed. but everytime I press the new/restore wallet button and put in the seed it just creates a new wallet without any of my funds. and the password dosent change on the my funds are in.

how can I restore my wallet without simply creating another one because ive tried this like 7 times and now I have 7 useless wallets.  Huh

I'm assuming that you are using Electrum? If so, which version? while recovering your wallets, are you sure that you are connected into a server? and If you check the receiving tab, do you see addresses that you have used before? (If that tab is no longer available in the version you are using), try use the listaddresses() command in the console.

I meant If the addresses after restoring the new wallet are the same as before doing the restore process. If it's the case, have you tried to export the private keys and import them somewhere else (another wallet)? that should do the trick.

Have you checked the change addresses and used addresses to see if they contain your coins? If you sent coins from any of your original addresses electrum will sent what's left over to a new change address each time.

At the lower left of your electrum wallet window there should be a little triangle that you have to click to see your change addresses. It's next to the mouse pointer in this screenshot.

I'm referring to the addresses shown when you click the address tab with the mouse pointer hovering over it in this screenshot. If you scroll to the bottom of that address window, then click the triangle next to where it says "change" extra addresses should show up.

That probably explains it, I'm using the windows version. However the dev keeps changing the GUI, so one version might look different to the previous version even on the same operating system.

Do you mean you can see the addresses containing your coins, or just a window full of addresses you don't recognise?

I installed electrum version 2.7.10 on windows, which is very close to your version. Does your version have an options button below the text box you type your seed into? If it has try clicking it and checking the BIP39 seed checkbox, then entering your seed.

This is what my electrum version 2.7.10 looks like after clicking the options button.

Go ahead and click New/Restore and create a brand new wallet and then enter the seed in the manner indicated above. This should recreate the wallet based on the seed provided.

I recreated a wallet from seed in my windows version of electrum. These screenshots show the exact steps I made. Try doing it that way, if it's any different to what you were already doing.

Can you try installing an electrum on a windows computer instead of on tails, then restoring from your seed on the windows version of electrum?

When you use file> new/restore you are creating a new wallet. Use file > open to open that wallet. Stop using your old wallet that has the password.

In your restored wallet look under "used" on the addresses tab to see if there are familiar addresses. If you are not seeing familiar addresses then you haven't successfully restored your wallet. In that case make sure the seed you have contains words from the electrum dictionary:

https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/blob/master/lib/wordlist/english.txt

I also suggest restoring with the latest version of electrum. 2.8.3 is the latest. You should download it form electrum.org and install it. It may be hard to do that on TAILS so install it on the OS you have on your hard drive.

Also note that in 2.8.3 you have to press ctrl+a to bring the addresses tab into view.

If he used his wallet a lot in the past and it created many change addreses, and you're trying to
recreate it from seed, you wont see all of them.

this shouldnt happen if you rename the wallet (instead of wallet_1) use a totally new name and old seed, you wont need the pwd then.  after that, if you dont see all your coins, increase the gap limit.

It's only a problem if you change the gap limit from the default. Otherwise electrum will discover all your change addresses too.

Also electrum is backward compatible with old seeds.

We see threads like these all the time but unfortunately we never learn the outcome because the OPs always stops replying. I suspect it is because they figure out what mistake they made and correct it. But they don't bother telling us. Here again the OP has stopped replying. Hopefully he will chime in so we can understand what happened.

He figured it out. It's just knowing the correct derivation path.
