FYI, I took profits on this surge and wait to buy back again later, because I think actually attain activation is going to take at least 2 weeks and probably longer.
In the meantime, I have bought ETH. It is in a descending wedge pattern that is going to close within 24 hours. It looks like it has to break to the upside. Perhaps Ethereum will make some announcement on the Raiden (LN clone) upgrade coming. Looks like they will beat Litecoin to having a rudimentary beta of off chain scaling.

can anyone explain how does the activation percentage work for litecoin because i though i understood it but it is a bit weird! the activation period consist of 8064 blocks and out of this 4404 or 66.31% is signalling SegWit. but looking at most sites they are reporting their main percentage based on the last 576 blocks which is 73-74%
so why is that?

If it drops below 75% after it's reached it, does the activation period stop until it gets back over 75%?

The activation period consists of 8064 blocks. On Litecoin this takes 14 days on average. During the current activation period that is running for 11 days or so has 66% of blocks signaling for SegWit.
During the last 24h (576 blocks) 73% blocks have signaled. The number is growing because the last pool to join in did so less than 24h ago.
Hope this clears things up.

i think someone changed his mind on the last minute and remove his signaling for litecoin, it make much more sense, then thinking that there was a random return below 75% The activation period consists of 8064 blocks. wasn't 76.8% why only 73%, if i understood you correctly we need to wait for the block time to have the last activation percentage?

Change of heart: No. Change of public face: YES this is what we can call a manipulation using the social media. 1. you start signalling SegWit and push the percentage up, 2. price goes higher than the initial pump. 3. you dump to take a big profit 4. you go on twitter and say something showing you are doubting your decision and create fear that you may stop at 74.9% 5. when price tanked you buy back with the money+profit 6. you say i changed my mind and will continue signalling! 7. price goes higher and now you have more litecoin than you had in step 1. and by you i mean F2Pool and the gang of investors who dumped in that big down dive.

Insane volatility, but a great time to make money day trading. I sold ETH at a profit and reentered LTC before the wedge breakout!

wasn't 76.8% why only 73%, if i understood you correctly we need to wait for the block time to have the last activation percentage? 1. An activation period is an activation period. Period. Every 8064 blocks there's a new one. This one (the 5th) has been running for 11,5 days and ends in about 2,5 days. It doesn't stop or start for anything. There's a new one every 8064 blocks. That's it. 2. For SegWit to activate the amount of blocks that have signaled support for SegWit (via a flag in the block) has to be over 75%. So during the next period (6th) at least 6048 blocks will have to include SegWit support flag. 3. The % jumps up and down daily like crazy. It's because of the mining variance or simply put it's just good/bad luck. Different sites use different methods, some show last 24h, some 20h, others show 576 blocks or 500 blocks, and last but not least there are the ones that compare current hashrate. So we are comparing very different numbers. TLDR: Daily % is BS! Number of blocks during a 14 day activation period is all that matters.

https://www.litecoinpool.org/pools#segwitApproximately 76.8% of the hashrate is now signaling for SegWit. BW.com just started signaling a few hours ago so the 24 hour average is rising and soon to surpass the 75% threshold for SegWit activation. Litecoin will get Lightning Networks (LN) off chain scaling. Bitcoin will not. Thus Litecoin is highly undervalued at $12 and should soon make a new ATH above $50. I expect Litecoin above $100 in 2017. 42.2% | F2Pool | 9% | LitecoinPool.org | 8.4% | HappyChina | 6.4% | BW.com | 6% | Le6oriAMKX... | 2.6% | Batpool | 1.4% | Coinotron | 0.8% | Give Me Coins |
I do agree that the price will go higher, this new segwit adoption will see Litecoin trying something no other major coin has tried before. However if it fails and doesn’t result with anything good for Litecoin that would also mean segwit may not be solution to bitcoin neither (low chance of it fail if you ask me) in which case it will push even lower. There is a short term price peak after Segwit tough that is for sure.

It will be interesting to see how quickly LN providers jump on board LTC. If that happens quickly even some of the more optimistic advocates of LTC might be surprised by the price increase.

Well the markets seem to think it is happening - Litecoin price is up 20% today. The litecoin subreddit seems pretty excited too: https://www.reddit.com/r/litecoin/

the social platforms like reddit subs for specific altcoins and this forum is always too excited when a rise or even a drop happens, that doesn't show much about the coin and its rise or drop. but litecoin seems to be on the rise again. as i was kinda expecting, all the twitter theatricals ended when they wanted a rise. and here we are now. now lets see how high we go before the actual activation of segwit hopefully in 2 weeks.

and with the new turn of events it seems like we are over the Segwit activation threshold (75%) with a big difference. currently at 80.9% for last 24 hours blocks. keep this up for the next difficulty re-target period and SegWit is activated. we have been partying for a while now. specially when price was 0.004 BTC and went up to 0.011 BTC. these are after-party hangovers before the next party of the next day starts

I mean unless f2pool turns into a pump and dump deal on this segwit issue its 80%+ now, no way they are going back. A major coin trying LN and Segwit, this is like a dream come true for a experimantalist, definitely worth to see what will happen and how will it happen. Would mainstream get to be introduced to Litecoin from now on in order to deal with faster payments and bitcoin will need to adapt, will it not work as intended and just becomes a useless feature? We will see soon.
