Religious experts claim that Jesus was an actual historic person. They cite as evidence the fact that he has the power to forgive sins, something that would not be possible if he were fictional.

Historians tend to lean towards considering him a fictional character. Among the evidence they cite is the fact that, during the time he supposedly lived, there is no mention of him in any writings. For a person who was supposed to be a major rabble rouser you would think there would be at least one mention of him from the time he existed, but there is none.

Some historical figures we know are real, because we have documentary proof, like photos and videos of their existence, people like Abraham Lincoln and Conan the Barbarian.

Other historical figures we are not so sure about, like Plato, whose only real proof of existence are the books he wrote and other comments about him, or Gilgamesh, who might or might not have been a person.

So was Jesus real?

He was a real person just like any of us but he came to manifest the father to us in the human flesh just as we are doing to the world today. Read St. John chapter 1,2 and 3. All three chapters will reveal the saviour Jesus as a person like us to you. Forget about philosophers and some historians.

But how come nobody ever mentioned him when he existed?

Truth is not arrived at by majority opinion.  Just the fact that he was crucified by the Roman authorities essentially for being a "rabble rouser" should be enough for you.  If a single thing was not written about him what would it matter.  We would still have word of mouth passed down from generation to generation.

My theory is that most of those "holy" people existed, but they were ordinary people, who tried to do good, so they got some extra credits, including magic spell powers, etc.
Im agree with it.
Some saints is an ordinary but have a contribution on the church.
And theI Pope is the only responsible to canonized that person to became a saints.

Truth does not change.  While the Church has grown and some disciplines may have changed, in its essence it is the same.  Try telling the people in Jerusalem 2000 ago that Jesus was ordinary or some sort of religious zealot after he raised people from the dead, expelled demons, cured leprosy, restored sight to the blind.  The miracles that he performed speak for itself

Truth does not change, okay. Is it 'the church' that is the truth, or is it some other thing that the church tries to reflect.

And from the beginning of human history, or at least since I was born, humans have made fables for children, disguised as fact, to teach children basic things. And when the children get older they filet the fable and extract the fact.

Only religions take fables and hire enforcers to prevent the truth from leaving the legend.

There was such a wandering Jewish preacher, but people to control other people endowed him with superpowers and wrote a bible. Fantasy is well settled in the minds of people and it is now difficult to eradicate it.

The Bible is an historical document.  The miracles and stories in it were witnessed by thousands of people.  Again, when Jesus rose from the dead and spent another 40 days walking around in Galilee before ascending to the Father (also witnessed by onlookers) where were the scoffers then?  If Christianity is a ruse why did the believers suffer and die at the hands of the pagan emperors.
1 Tm 3:15 says that the Church is the pillar and foundation of truth.  Without a living, breathing entity to safeguard the truth for all generations, what would have been the point?

Jesus was real.

I don't think it's really up for debate.

I agree it's not really up for debate.

It's pointless to debate with a brainwashed person.  They are probably subject to weekly brainwash sessions of at least an hour, where they chant and reinforce their beliefs.  To see the truth would force them to see things they don't want.

The Bible is not a historical document, but myths written by different people at different times. And bad people made a tool for the management of other people from the Bible.

Boblawblaw,

Yes, it was heavy sarcasm.  It's true what Cool Hand Luke once said:  "Some men you just can't reach"

Here's a question for ya.  If the Lord did not become man in about year 1 AD, then what separates BC from AD?  Why have so many governments and cultures around the world based their calendars on the Lord?

It's ironic that atheists try so hard to replace "BC" with "BCE" and replace "AD" with "CE" so they don't have to give any glory to God.  But what differentiates the "common era" from the years before it?  What's common about it?   Even from an atheist point of view, if they were honest, "CE" should be thought of as the "Christian era".

No evidence of Jesus?  Even the calendar gives Him glory.

Very strange opinions of different people. They reject and refute everything that surrounds them. The existence of Christ many years ago is confirmed even by science. So, guys do not even believe in science?

Scholarly opinion varies on the total or partial authenticity of the reference in Book 18, Chapter 3, 3 of the Antiquities, a passage that states that Jesus the Messiah was a wise teacher who was crucified by Pilate, usually called the Testimonium Flavianum.[4][5][1] The general scholarly view is that while the Testimonium Flavianum is most likely not authentic in its entirety, it is broadly agreed upon that it originally consisted of an authentic nucleus...

There was such a person, but nothing supernatural could not imagine. People have thought too much about him. It is foolish for someone to prove something.

Of course, to prove something very important is impossible, especially without proof. And they can not be at all, because it is safe and there are no witnesses.

i believe he existed. i also believe was a regular guy with some very tall tales glued on at a later date.

look at how easy info is distorted among a group of people within a few minutes. times that by a few hundred years and suddenly some guy who was nice to people winds up being the son of the creator of the universe.

uh huh.
