Recently, I've mining (bitcoin) using the binary cgminer on a new install of xubuntu 12.04 with the 12.8 catalyst drivers.

I'm getting about 580mh/s per car for a gigabyte 7950.

In a variety of places that document mining setup, as well as the cgminer readme itself, it says that the AMD SDK is required. I am not using the AMD SDK, and my hashrate does not appear to be suffering.

The only conclusion I've come to is that the binary cgminer doesn't actually require it. Can anyone else confirm this?

Does cgminer require the SDK for scrypt mining? I don't get a good scrypt hashrate, but that could be a result of other factors.

it requires the AMD APP (or opencl) runtime only. SDK includes the runtime, but so does the latest version of catalyst.

It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

Thanks grue. A few years ago when I was GPU mining, I recall the SDK was itself was required in addition to the catalyst driver.
