Hey guys,
I just want to share my story, because I feel like only people in this community can get that,
We all know the pizza story, the "young swede than became a millionaire in 2013" story, the lost hard drive story and this one that can happen to anyone:
======>I lost my passphrase. 6months ago, tried everything, even hired "bitcoin dave", nope, nothing, no password no bitcoin.
I was too scared to get hacked somehow or to let a piece of paper with indications about it... Now I'm screwed, I can't find it, no matter what I try my Bitcoins are lost forever. I always kept them, spent .10 of them once and that's it. All of my fortune behind this password was made through mining dogecoin on day one and other altcoins. And guess what, I lost the passphrase to the dogecoins too (1million Doge, could be worse)... 6 months ago I had a little financial down moment, decided to see if I could sell one, and discovered that I forgot the password.
Now, it would be the thing to save my ass (3,5 BTC is a good chunk of change for me) and be able to get back on my feet, and I feel so stupid.
Just wanted to share my experience, kinda looking for mental support here!
Take care (and remind yourself your passphrase everyday, you don't want this feeling I swear).
That's so sad man. 3,5 BTC is not small at all. I have mine written on a note. I have not checked it for long, but I'll go do that as soon as possible. sorry to hear about your loss.

I`m really sorry about your experience with btc. If i had a few bitcoins to hold for a long time.I would write down the password on a piece of paper and lock it down somewhere.I always use passwords that i can remember....

I am using multiple paper wallet to keep my coins. This is one of the reason why I don't use the BIP0038 to encrypt my private keys. I am keeping is somewhere safe and my family have access to the paper wallets. In case I am gone, they can still use the paper wallet without the passphrase... Pros and cons I guess...
Never give up... Just think about the coin has been donated.

i remember andreas suggesting to hide your bitcoins in a picture of a cat. if you lose the pwd just get them from there. search openpuff
there are a lot of these ideas out there, it is best to come up with some combination according to where you live and the household objects you have! for example i read once about someone who was keeping his electrum seed in his physical phone book. among names and random phone numbers!

That was so very sad, getting your passphrase been lost and your bitcoin was so very secure that even you can not open it now, a year earn bitcoin and alts all stored and lock is this considered lost to even thought it is sealed and secure? because nobody can used it unless you could hack a secured data that needs a passphrase to be open, I can not think that mistake would happen to me I think i would also go crazy about it, I think you are feeling a multiple kind of feeling right now that could cause you some inner craziness inside of you, I think you should do is try every passphrase you can think off it might word, but depicting that you can come out of a one passphrase, only an idiot would manually type it!

Oh my god, I really wish this turns out one bad dream and reality changes. Mind if I ask you why did you not note it somewhere. I use multiple passwords for all sites and I have made a diary for it. Or you could have kept it in a note app and lock. At the end words may not be able to console you but all I can say be positive, who knows you will earn double what went away. However I do appreciate you taking time out to warn everybody out here and many people do not do it, but hopefully people will become more aware and not repeat it.

Now what happens to those coins? Are they lost forever? Or will someone else recover them? Nope, I was too scared to get hacked somehow, so no written trace of any kind for the password. Yes, the coins are lost forever or until someone with a super powerful computer can crack open the wallet (someone has a service to do that, I hired him and he couldn't find it). Either way right now, today, I'm pretty screwed.

Thanks! Sometimes I dream that I find it back, rush to my computer and try it without any luck, but yeah, who knows maybe it will pop out of my memory...

Did you lose the private key to 1DGLZ2cDMrUPor4CmWxjsVzzYSyimUUYbC?
If so you should probably take it out of your signature.
i see zero bitcoin there, can't be that, how many coin you lost with this password that you forgot? because i find also some times that i'm too paranoid, but not for small amount, but for big amount i usually keep them in cold storage to avoid any real trouble

That is why I always repeat to newbies, that they should be 100% sure that they sensitive details about wallet are always secure. For example, you can just use paper wallet as a way to store the BTC, but you should obviously encrypt it that way, to not be easy to crack it by someone from the outside, and also it is a good idea to hide the paper wallet. But you need to remember that the place need to meet some requirements, unless you want you lose your bitcoin- the paper may simply rot or get wet, something that you just cannot predict.
But losing the access is something terrible, I really dont want to meet such a fate. That is why I always make some kinds of backup to be safe no matter what.

All these years we were pampered by centralized services. Some of us are sometimes incapable of taking care of our most precious possessions. We would rather trust 3rd party to keep our money safe than believe in ourselves.
Op, your total loss was that 3.5 BTC?
I know it is too late now, but what wrong is with keeping copy of your passphrase stored in multiple places in your house? You don't trust your family?

Yes, total loss is 3,47 BTC. I totally trust my family 100000%, but somehow I felt like I would never forget a password that I created for 3 reasons: - I have (now I look stupid saying that) very good memory. - I'm the "organized" type. Never loose a thing, never forget appointements etc... - Back when I got into bitcoin, I didn't feel like I could ever loose this password, because I've used the "skeleton" so much in my life that I just had to remember the "wallet variation" I had created. Bottomline, I know most of it, but there is too many possibilities of cap letters, numbers used or not, that even a pro cracker didn't manage to crack....

That was a sad loss. Even though we think we won't ever forget a passphrase, we also must understand that we're just humans incapable of retaining every bit of information with our brains. Anyways, the next time you should try to write it down and give some of the copies to your loved ones since you said you trust them enough as well.

It is simple, you don't have to remember anything just hide your wallet seed somewhere in your house in a place that you and a few close relatives have access. And let's be honest even if thieves break into your home and find your seed probably they won't have an idea what is this about, Bitcoin is not so popular yet, and not everyone knows how to use a wallet.
