Solo Mining

again, please excuse my ignorance, I am pretty new at this.

I am considering going solo.  I know the argument that you get approx the same solo or pooling.

my question is>  Is there a way to track your progress when you solo mine?  I realize that there is no way to know when your going to get a block,  but my fear is that I run at 2.7 Ghash for a week,  have to shut down for maint or whatnot, then when I start again, am I starting over? or is my weeks worth of hashing valid towards finding the block..

clearer question:   if I mine at 2.7G for a week, stop for a day, then start again, do I start over?  How do I know?

The simple answer is no. This is because there is no "progress". Its like doing a lottery ticket 1000 times a second, its very unlikely you will win, but after a week or a month its pretty likely you will, and on average, it all evens out, so there is no concept of progress. If you stop for a bit, thats fine, each of the completed work units you submit once you restart have the same chance of winning.

To be sure you really are mining, and look at the log from your miner. Pretty much, if it says you are, you are, and if it says you are not, your not!

Also be aware that bad luck can be a b***h. Sometimes it can take 2 or 3 times as long as the average, can your pyyche take that?
You also get to thinking, when you have good luck that that should be the norm!

You don't start over, see it as a lotto game.

You have 10 dice in your hand and throw them again and again up, until all land on the 1.
The odds are everytime the same, there is no progress on to finding a block.


with 2,7 Gh @ 877226.666667 difficulty you will need to find a block:

Average   16 days, 3 hours, 37 minutes
50%   11 days, 4 hours, 40 minutes
95%   48 days, 9 hours, 13 minutes

Odds are not so high to get one in this difficulty, and in the next the odds go down.

Thank you.  that clears that!  That also explains why the pool sometimes takes 3 hours to find a block.
