I was thinking about setting up a group buy for the k16 parts. This would help most miners get their units at a much cheaper price. What do you think?
The problem isn't the price but availability.
Two parts in particular but a third one probably as well.

PIC - SS or ML
0.36 uH Inductor
IR3895

The rest are easy and I would have bought heaps to resell as kits with boards if I didn't worry about not having those  to complete the kits.

If you can locate a heap of those for me I'll put together kits that will equal almost any group buy you could do, since many are ordering boards anyway and postage would not be much more.

I have looked at some Coilcraft and there are one or two that could drop in with a slight board mod. I've resisted because they don't seem to have deep stock either, though I really haven't checked everywhere. If someone had 1000 of the other parts coming and wanted a board to fit the Coilcraft, because they could get 1000, it would be a very easy change.

Looks like you can get boatloads of the IR3895 there, if thats correct one, prolly have some of the other parts there too.

My assembler (the guy who will assemble boards) wants to prepare all the components before assembling, so he requested a silkscreen with the placement of each component on the PCB. And sent me an example (in my previous post).

BKKCoins some of us are wondering on K1 heat sink drill holes specs for fastening the diagonal screws (heat sink template). Will that be ready this week?

Also just wanted to ask about the BOM for the K1s. Can you highlight the revised parts so people can explain to the fabricators which parts will be used for the revised K1's. Worried about errors in BOM ordering.

Install kicad, check out the project from GitHub (https://github.com/bkkcoins/klondike), open the project file, choose which board you want and export the silkscreen layer to PNG or Gerber, whichever your assembler prefers.

Something like that should work, but Kicad is dismally bad at handle silkscreen text. I cannot get it do output reliably and I've tried many times. It will leave off half the text items, or after moving them all into ideal positions they'll all print in their original seemingly random spots. This, and not liking clutter, is the reason I added specific text marking of my own, and disabled the "Front Text" rendering option. I thought it was bugs in the SVG rendering, but it does the same with Gerbers. Some C?? refs show but most don't. I haven't had time to go into the file and explore the raw data but it's a bit absurd that this is necessary.

I'm putting off ordering boards and PICs (need about 100) in hopes that this could happen. However I also have chips coming in with steamboat's batch 1 and want to begin assembly asap. I'm worried that once I place an order the very next day you'll offer the kits Smiley Would I be better off sourcing parts on my own and putting in a board/PIC order now? Decisions decisions... what do you guys think?

What. Even the components that fit on the edge of a dime aren't that bad. I'm more worried about the tiny QFN48 package on the ASIC.

You are one of the talented people I was talking about then. ;-)   Have you seen this video?  Some good tips on soldering QFN packages. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_rO6oPVsws
To build either the K16 or K1 you need to be detail oriented and capable of fine work with small parts. I didn't find it terribly hard with any of the parts using tweezers but I think the ASIC packages are a bit easier with vacuum tweezers ($5 on ebay). I may add those to my store if people want them. You will want some kind of magnifying work light or head piece because getting good position without is going to be near impossible.

However, you aren't going to do either of these boards with a soldering iron. The only way really to get good results is with solder paste, stencil and oven. Going this way the only hard part is placing the parts on the board. You have to be very methodical in making sure each part is in the correct place and oriented correctly, and this will likely take several hours at least per board. A mistake can be disastrous. If that step is done properly then the reflow oven step is quite easy and quick, and you should have a working board within minutes.

I'll be putting together a PDF assembly guide with step by step placement diagrams and check lists to help with this, but as I've stressed a few times this is not a project for a beginner. Or at least not a beginner without a strong background in fine model making or clear idea what's involved here.

I appreciate everyone's input on this, I have been watching youtube videos and I know what's involved, I will be getting a reflow oven and all the required gear, it's a cool hobby, and if I screw it up, it's only money, and not even a lot.

Keep up the good work and keep the advice coming Smiley

Some parts will only be available in a few months. I just saw on digikey that the 38L361C will only be shipped December 18,2013! That is if I buy 1000 of them hahahaha. Bkkcoin has to come up with a patch I think lol. I sent him a msg, hopefully there's a replacement for it (I'm not an E.E. so I wouldn't know hahaha)

Both Coilcraft MLC1260-401ML and Pulse PA2202.361NLT are possible candidates but have to be designed into the board.
At least this Coilcraft shows on Mouser. There are a couple others which seem harder to find, eg. MVR1251T-361ML.
The Pulse, I don't know where they come from as none of the places I checked had them.

Easy board changes if there is stock available and the other parts are resolved.

Could be a revision but not on the current board because people have been buying these up for over a month and are expecting to use them on the board as it is now. Vendors have been planning and buying stock for even longer. Which is no doubt why there is none left. Obviously I can't switch them on the current board, but if someone were to need 100+ boards with a different part a custom revision could be arranged.

Or, it is open source. Anyone can fork it and make a revision for some part change, order boards and buy parts accordingly.

Another possible revision - though much more difficult, is to use the PIC18LF14K50 part instead. This is stocked in boat loads, and is pretty much the same but also requires an external oscillator adding to the parts cost.

True, kinda forgot about it :S.
Can I solder the replacement part (Dead Bug Style) on the board? That way there is no need for a total PCB replacement.

For MLC1260-401ML, which Mouser has 50 in stock.

Depends how perfect you want it to be. The pad widths are about the same, 2.7 vs 2.8mm.
The pad lengths are slightly larger, 4.0 vs 3.1mm. But the spacing between is 4mm instead of 2.4mm.
So to make that work you would scratch part of the board area on the side away from the buck reg. so that it has more exposed contact area. It's 12mm instead of 8.6 so you would open up about 3mm. Do that and cut the stencil a bit and then you can paste as usual, but clean off any paste on the inner edge so it cannot contact the wrong terminal. Not even very messy really.
