Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

Yep.  One of the prominent geocaches was here, although that guy seems to have decided that a restricted Internet will kill Bitcoin now, strangely enough.

Online geotagging seems like a pretty unnecessary idea for Bitcoin though.  Let's keep it to GeoCoin, since everything has its own coin apparently.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about this, guys. I was thinking around the same thing with online geotagging, as it may be prone to abuse. However, if this would rely on GPS technology to determine your exact location, then it would make the system fairer, as it may be impossible to spoof your mobile device's GPS location. But if possible, then it would be abused and make the coin completely worthless.

Nevertheless, it is good to have coins which are used for a specific purpose, instead of being an "all in one" cryptocurrency. There will be areas where Bitcoin could fill in, while other altcoins prove to be useful at other things. In my own opinion, GeoCoin might be worth a try. Just my thoughts.  Grin

Do bitcoins exist at a particular point? If I have the bitcoins in cold storage and the key at 2 different points (say in US and China), what is the location of these bitcoins? Bitcoins exist only in the virtual world.

What's the point of Bitcoin geotagging? Bitcoin is a crypto currency not a advertisment that you need Geo tag. It will surely be used for misue and I don't think there really any need for Geo tag. As it could leave the space open for government to snoop down on Bitcoin, like use Google map and see which address has Bitcoins and on to him. No I don't think it's such a wise idea after all. As far Bitcoin facuets add are concerned they mostly come Geo targeted in many facuets I believe so.

There is in fact an App called Takara made by Mandelduck that allowed bitcoin treasure hunt using geocaching.

Try it out if you have iOS: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/takara/id1009304559?ls=1&mt=8

I fully agree. Are we not in Bitcoin because of its seeming anonymity? In fact, there are those who are saying that Bitcoin is not 100% anonymous and then this suggestion of geo-tagging would be counter intuitive to the very premise of bitcoin. For now, I don't see a practical use for such a thing.

So how does this work? People are able to leave Bitcoin (virtually?) as a geocache?

I mean any other use of bitcoin travels with the owner, essentially. Sounds interesting if it is true geotagging.

That is very possible and feasible and a faucet owner could invest on such system that will encourage people to explore the globe online and at the same time earn some satoshis. But the problem lies on who will be the one to take step and adopt this system. Another potential suggestion would be to integrate free satoshis in google earth and google will bring a huge impact on bitcoin if that happens.

Now that is what I've been looking for all along. An app that would allow you to treasure hunt for Bitcoins, similar to GeoCoin. I will try this out on my iPod touch.

In case you know of any other great apps for Bitcoin geotagging, feel free to share them here.  Wink

Yes, it is a very interesting concept. The way it works is that people just mark a specific point in the map for others to treasure hunt for Bitcoin. It would be similar like GeoCoin, but applying the same concept for Bitcoin. If this becomes practical, then it would help attract more people into BTC, as no one can resist free money.

I think that it would be better to hunt for Bitcoins at a given point in the map, than relying on faucets, as this concept of geotagging is so much fun.  Smiley
